I keep my old heart in a plastic bag - born different

Jessica Manning, 28, from New Zealand, was diagnosed at birth with six different heart defects - meaning that she had the equivalent of half a heart, with multiple holes and leaky valves. By her third birthday, she had already had two open-heart surgeries and she was given only a few years to live. She has undergone over 200 surgeries, including five open heart surgeries, two pacemaker surgeries, and one emergency lung surgery. At 25, she had both a heart and liver transplant. Jessica explained the process to Truly: -I knew that a transplant is a pretty big surgery considering I was having both organs done. It's weird to think that at one point there is just a machine in the middle of my chest, keeping all the rest of my vital organs pumping while they take out my heart and they insert my donor's heart. They replaced my heart first before they got to my liver. - The recovery from her surgery was intensive: -I was in the hospital for a total of 53 days in ICU, 14 days on the ward and I was in the cardiac rehabilitation centre for 21 days, she said. Despite the trauma of her medical history, she now wears her scars with pride: -Due to all the surgeries that I have had, I have a whole chest and stomach full of scars, which I absolutely adore and love. I show them to everyone. - Since the surgery was successful, Jessica offered her heart and liver to go to a New Zealand university for research. 10 months later, she was told her heart was ready to collect and now she keeps it at home. Jessica continued: -I store it in my wardrobe, I think it looks like cookie dough. - Now she shows her heart online, and answers questions on the topic of organ transplants. Her TikTok videos gain millions of views, and Jessica hopes it will educate others on the importance of organ donation: -I was hoping by sharing my complete story, the good, the bad, the raw that it will spread the awareness out on heart disease and actually how serious it is and how much it can impact someone's life

I got my pacemaker at 23 and I'm now 33. Before the pacemaker I had 4 heart procedures and 2 heart surgeries. I have what's called supraventicular tachycardia also known SVT along with 5 other rhythmic issues and in turns my blood pressure and pulse drops really low and I faint. I live on the day watching my heart and how I feel. I get tired easily. But I never give up and I fight to get the care I need to survive. With my heart problems I have crohns disease, fibromyalgia, trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve pain, migraines, 3 herniated discs with also bad knees. I'm not stranger to having to fight to be able to accomplish what I need to. And fighting for disability has been over 2 years. I need all the help I can get but unfortunately here in the United States it's hard for me to get what I need. I say it's because I am female and I have 2 college degrees go figure

To be honest I don't really understand the purpose of showing random people her old heart and what they will learn from looking at it unless she is showing doctors ect. And I also think they could learn way more if they were able to study her old heart in a lab or something. But I can definitely understand wanting to keep the heart and I don't find it weird at all. Maybe if it was rotting away and stinking up the house it would be. But I'm guessing it's not for whatever reason. I wouldn't want to throw out my heart either. Its probably how she copes with the loss idk.

My sister passed away a few years ago and she was an organ donor. She was able to give 6 organs to people in need. I-m so proud of her for her gift of life to others. I was in a terrible accident that broke my back in 3 places. I had to have reconstructive spine surgery and learn to walk again. During that surgery cadaver bone was used to reconstruct my spine. Someone donated their bones which I-m so great full for. I to am a donor and hope to one day when it-s my time to go can help others who are in need.

As an organ donor, if I ever passed with them in a condition to be transferred, I would be honored to save a life like hers. She has been through so much and is an inspiration. My husband is a 12 times injured wounded warrior (doc) and I feel the same about wounded warriors and people who struggle with lifetime illness and childhood cancers. You are all reminders to the rest of us that life is precious, and we remember you in our thoughts and prayers. -

Technically, if it's your organs you should be able to keep it, that's pretty cool that New Zealand has that policy. The U. S. could learn a thing or two from New Zealand and yes I'm American. Congrats to her. Seeing & hearing stories really make me think about my life and what I take for granted.

Thank you for sharing your heart with us and for using it as a teaching aid. Why wouldn't someone want to keep such an important piece of themselves? I'm curious if getting the transplant earlier in your life would've meant fewer surgeries for you. I'm glad to be a registered organ and tissue donor.

My friends daughter was born with a hole in her heart and had her first open heart surgery after birth and underwent another. She and her parents spent nearly 5 months (before one month before due date) in hospital and have since returned home last month.

Awe she's so beautiful and strong! I've had Hodgkin's Lymphoma on and off for the last 17 years and I kept my first port that they removed. I plan to do the same w the one I currently have if I ever am in remission again.

No doubt, I would keep the heart! You were actually nearer to death than life with such a heart. Let us thank all the brave organ donors and their brave families. May your young live now continue healthy and happy.

1) Amazing Journey that she is on. Wow!
2) I wish we had the choice on keeping our organs.
3) Holy cow, her heart was HUGE! How utterly mind-blowing! She is such a warrior.

Though showing off your heart online is weird, it's very understandable from all she's been through, since it changed her life. Poor girl, I'm really happy for her, she's a trooper.

Wonder what government paperwork or document she has to keep with her heart? Who signed off for her to take her heart home. Is she allowed to fly with heart?
reply

Well I like her I will do the same way to keep the heart - I wished you always healthy and successful everything in your life a beautiful woman - take care.

I have heart disease also. I have 5 heart deformities I was born with. I-ve been very fortunate to have only had one open heart surgery so far

My aunt got a really bad heart disease and she passed away in 2016. We have missed her a lot. I am glad the girl in the video is a fighter -

I would so totally keep my old organs in glasses at home - But I am pretty sure that they wouldn't let one keep them in my country -

Be careful if you have a yard sale -. Heard of the guy in the US who accidentally sold his arm? The buyer even refused to give it back.
reply

I'm an organ donor-But hey if I went through what she has been through I would keep my - also. Respect to you and stay blessed.
reply

That is so cool that she got to keep it. But I'd think in a jar full of alcohol it would be easier to see all the details
reply

I wonder if they had given her the chance for a transplant earlier, they could have at least saved her liver?
reply

You really are a brave girl, at the end I was happy when you said you are living a normal happy life. Thank God
reply

You are the strongest person I have ever met! I love that you are using experiences to do so much good!
