Brandon,
My accident was March of 2014. What you and I share in common is that twilight zone of missing information. I had that, too. But piece by piece, most of mine returned to me. It returned to me in exactly the way that you tried to recover your memories of that pre-accident evening. When a van from my nursing home drove me over the highway toward my home, it passed the spot of my accident (3 months earlier. SO much came back to me. Here's what I remembered. There had been construction on the highway. Closed exit lanes forced me to stay on the freeway far past the exit to my house. I'd finally been able to exit, U-turn (do a 180, and head back toward home. I'd wondered for three months what I'd done or where I'd gone that put me in that spot heading in that direction. [Details of the car accident are omitted here. ]
I'm paralyzed and missing a leg now, but I'm alive and glad of it.

He-s lucky he was young and had great insurance. The ability of a young brain to come back from trauma is pretty amazing. My story isn-t as dramatic but I had brain damage during birth that effected my proprioception. Other parts of my brain took over and while I-m still clumsier then most, it-s not a crazy level of clumsiness-s. It-s funny tho bc my motor skills are less unconscious (tho it-s basically unconscious unless it-s something very new I-m trying) when I was pregnant and my body changing so rapidly, I was always wacking my stomach on stuff. Bc I don-t have that innate understanding of my body in space, if I wasn-t thinking about things like going through a doorway, I-d wack my belly on the door frame. I was convinced my baby would come out with dents. But still it-s pretty amazing how other parts of my brain took on the job of helping me navigate the world.

It-s heartbreaking at the end when he blames himself for the accident because he didn-t wear a helmet. It-s not his fault at all. It-s the hit-and-run criminal-s fault. Even if he had been wearing a helmet, there is no guarantee he would have been perfectly fine. The criminal could have hit a pedestrian just as easily, who also would not be wearing a helmet. And even if there is no criminal at all, and it was just a freak accident of falling, it-s still not his fault this horrible thing happened to him. He didn-t deserve to be hurt like this. I hope he considers therapy to overcome some of the emotional fallout from the accident. He seems all healed up physically, intellectually, and mentally, but anyone could benefit from the emotional support therapy provides after a traumatic, life-threatening injury.

I severely lack empathy and don't know how to express it- Or in other words mines very muted due to personal reasons but while I was watching this I actually started to cry at some point- Personally it's kinda like. For me overwhelming to see someone lose a piece of their skull from such a small thing they were doing, for example, getting taco bell. It's just really weird to be me and feel empathy because I like, never feel it anymore. I just personally struggle to imagine positively what it would be like to just lose that and not really remember why.

This really warms my heart to know that he is recovering and feeling better about himself and his accident, when I was 10 years old I suffered from a brain tumor in my sleep and I had to be immediately rushed to the hospital while falling unconscious in my family-s apartment at the time, the crazy thing is I will never know what happened the night I fell asleep as well, just the thought of it all scares me looking back at it, two days waking up in the hospital with a scar on my head

Severe head trauma often ends up in memory loss. My severe head injury resulted in a memory loss of details 3 days prior to my injury, how my injury happened, the weeks spent in the hospital and the first week of rehab. My friends who were present at the time of the accident saved my life and I can only trust their account of the accident so at least I know what happened. Now 2 yrs later the memories are still gone but life moves on.

I'm sorry but I have to point this out. Being a perfectionist has NOTHING to do with obsessive compulsive disorder. Using the phrase -I'm real OCD- makes the condition sound trivial and not serious at all. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a very serious anxiety disorder which disrupts people's lives in a negative way. Please stop using ignorant language like this. It makes sufferers of the condition cringe.

Riding a skateboard, at night, down a closed road, something tells me a bicycle was flying down the same street, and when he turned, he tried to avoid colliding with the bicycle, throwing him somewhere onto the concrete? Wonder if there were any mounted cameras nearby that could have recorded what happened? He may never know, but he's alive, and that's all that matters!

I wonder if it could have been possible for surgeon to clean and re-use his own skull bone for it to bond instead of trying to reshape and recreate an alternative multiple times or i also wonder if they had already tried this method or not. because it seems in almost perfect condition i would have been curious would it heal and regrow like other broken bones -

I wonder if he still enjoys skateboarding or lost the enjoyment of it. I see he was driving a car afterward and got a passion for being creative and doing other things. I'm just curious if he still skateboards or not. If he doesn't I totally understand why, and if he still does that's cool that it didn't hold him back from still doing it.

Ok, it's been said before but louder for those in the cheap seats:
We Love These Inspirational Stories! However, You Need A New Catagory!
These simply don't apply to a Born Different genre. The amazing and resilient people you showcase here are phenomenal and should be recognized as such.
I'll get off the soapbox now.

What a brave and remarkable young man! And this answers my question of -has anyone ever kept an amputated part of themselves, via accident, punishment or whatever? - So many emotions must run through Brandon's mind when he holds a part of his own dead skull like that, I don't know if I would manage as well as he has with that!

Things like this happen every day and although it sucks he is one of the lucky few that it only lived but can walk, talk, see and still has his intelligence! Maybe it's best he doesn't know and he is absolutely correct, stick with what you know! And as a metal artist I hope he does incredibly well with his shop!

I feel like I am looking at my own story, I also had an accident that is a total mystery it was something that plagued my thoughts, until I decided it didn-t matter I will probably never know what happened to me and maybe that-s a good thing maybe the truth is just to painful

It's sad how much he seems to blame himself for not wearing his helmet, but if anyone has a cautionary tale to tell, i guess its him. Just a sad note to end on. he seems like a good kid. hopefully he'll remember one day if that will bring him a sense of closure.

The fact that no one knows how and he woke up and said he was hit by a car. I genuinely think that someone hit him and immediately threw him in their car and drove him like crazy to the hospital then ran before they got charged

I think, maybe, he was hit by a car, the driver is a doctor/nurse, they took him to the hospital they work at or did work at, knew how to avoid the cameras, with maybe a one to a few colleagues helping the offender out.

Perfectionism is not OCD, damn. I'm so annoyed by people thinking they have OCD when they're just a perfectionist or enjoy a tidy environment. But of course it is terrible what happened to him, I hope things work out

I-m a nurse, what you have been through-your personal journey-reminds me why I chose my profession. Taking care of people like you, watching over patients and providing the medical care while they heal, is what I love!

At least you are alive. My brother had brain surgery due to a car accident in 2011, and from that day on, he has been in a nursing home, and we are in 2003, so you are lucky, man
