GABRIEL was 17 when he hit the gym for the first time, working out to sculpt and build his body. He told Truly: I wanted to be appealing to the opposite sex. I wanted to be a big, strong man. Determined to look his best, Gabriel dedicated three hours each day to training. I just wanted to be bigger than everyone else, he admitted. One day in November 2020, Gabriel did a 50 kilos bicep curl when things took a dramatic turn. He explained: I heard a loud snapping sound. Screamed in the middle of the gym, dropped the weight and went to the hospital. Assessing his injuries, doctors told Gabriel that they would have to reattach his bicep with elective surgery. However, just days after the operation, Gabriel was rushed back to hospital and put in an induced coma for 10 days. Gabriel had contracted an infection called necrotising-fasciitis. He said: It's basically a bug that kills your flesh. The infection was spreading. They just had to keep removing flesh because it was spreading so rapidly and I was more likely to die than pull through. Luckily, Gabriel survived, but to save his life, surgeons were forced to amputate his right arm. It wasn't until three days after I woke up that I looked in the mirror and my arm was missing. It was confronting to say the least, he said. In this episode of Shake My Beauty, we'll hear about the physical and mental obstacles that Gabriel has endured since that life-changing day. Reflecting on his journey, Gabriel revealed: Beauty comes in many forms. Regardless of how you look, it's still important to be a beautiful person on the inside

3 hours a day it's way too much, one day rest a month it's over training.
50 kilos curl arms it's way too heavy.
Guys don't do that.
Train 45 minutes / 1 hour a day max, but train intensity, 3/4 times a week it's enough to be strong and big, and rest. Rest is very important part of the fitness, if you are over training, you get injuries, body fatigue, and the body don't respond well to that.
in opposition if you have good quality of rest with great food you will make great progress-

I understand the idea that exercising too much is not good for you and they could have used the injury as an example but the loss of the arm wasnt because of that, it was because of an infection contracted during surgery - which can happen with anyone during any type of surgery. its a bit cruel to make him say things that imply some sort of -guilt- onto him for losing his arm when it was either the surgeon's fault or just a pure unfortunate event.

This is such an inspiring story. He has such internal strength and determination; that in itself is attractive. The fact he is not afraid to admit his vulnerabilities with the loss of his arm is also very attractive. To top it he looks good on the outside too. - He has nothing to worry about as far as attracting girls- attention.

but it sounds like a doctor's fault that the infection started. they probably used dirty instruments during the first surgery. you say like it is your own fault but looks like doctors are to blame. they attached the muscle and that had to be it. but infection started and it was probably doctor's fault.

Glad he is doing ok. A lot of people don't realize that doing heavy-weight with a preacher curl is very risky and puts the bicep in a position where it is very susceptible to snapping. Preacher on a selectorized machine is a bit safer I think. The machine doesn't let the arm straighten out quite as far, imo.

You didn't lose your arm because of training or trying to -get the perfect physique-
You lost your arm because your healthcare practitioner who performed your surgery was incompetent and the flesh eating disease was contracted through unsterile equipment. I hope you sued them for tens of millions.

I think it's misleading that he lost his arm due to over exercising but it was rather a freak infection following a corrective surgery to address a sports related injury. I'm glad he's getting a prosthetic because it's amazing what dexterity I've seen wearers achieve once they master it!

They did a great job in stopping that infection, I've read horror stories of people losing both or all their limbs from this infection. that's a great thing to be grateful for, it can always be worse. I'm sure through your journey you've realized that. Great overcomer -

Does Gabriel know how he contracted the necrotising-fasciitis? Was it the fault of his medical team? If it is, I hope he's able to sue. As another commenter said, his initial injury was from the weight lifting, but the infection after surgery is what took his arm.

He did amazing! It must have been and probably still is very tough on him daily. But he keeps pulling through and that's amazing. This story needs to be widely known. Because there are so many expectations nowadays about how one needs to look like.

I'm glad that Gabriel seems to have regained his confidence. I hope he's able to make the Special Olympics team. In the US, people would likely assume he's a war veteran.

It-s seems that people who have these devastating experiences come out on the other side such a better, more centered person. I wish him all the best that life has to offer

I always tell people that even Marvel Characters don't want to train like Marvel Characters. and they get paid million of dollars to do so.

The arm loss was because of a hospital-acquired infection - not from the bicep curl. Did you sue the hospital or surgeon for malpractice?
reply

He seems like a great guy and has grown as a person through this unfortunate experience. Wishing him happiness and a good life!
reply

I'm pissed off that the hospital/care provider considered a bicep reattachment an -elective surgery- and wouldn't help him. -

This human is so so amazing truly the testament of the best in us! Amazing way he pulled himself through the grief of this loss --

Sounds like he needs to sue the hospital for not taking proper precautions to prevent the infection that cost him his arm.

What a wonderful story and outlook on life. He's inspirational. I hope I could be so gracious about obstacles in my life.
