We were very lucky to see a huge captive one in Hiruzen near Tsuyama when we went there to eat roast mutton and visit the Jersey cow herd.

The Japanese name of this Japanese giant salamander is Oo-sanshou-uo, literally meaning Giant Japanese pepper fish.
