It's not pastRies it's PASTIES miners from all over( but mostly Ireland) carried them in their pockets down in the mines. The crust acted like a package that carried the filling which was lunch. They would throw the crust down into the mines to feed the pixies, the sprites. whoever. to keep them safe.
