The majority of the universe is made up of a currently mysterious entity that pervades space: dark energy. We don-t know exactly what it is, but we do know that dark energy accelerates the expansion of space. We think this means the Universe will expand forever, even as our view of it shrinks while space expands faster all the time. Crash Course Astronomy Poster

Dear DR plaite,
Would it make more sense to think of a number of multidimensional soap bubbles intersecting and forming our universe with its set of rules. And like colliding galaxies our universe is a open system that is dynamic and we are currently experiencing expansion because the soap bubbles that cause our intersection (universe) is creating the strangeness. And maybe dark energy and dark matter are artifacts caused by high dimensional objects that we can only experience through its gravitational affect. What if thats what causes us to misqueue a jump or step and causes accidents. Phase shifted gravitational sources where light does not interact, what if all matter has more dimensions too it than we think, what would we look like through a 4-space or 5-space perspective, how twisted would perspective look outside of our 2D+ perspective (because EM plane waves. Even imaging 3-dimensional coupling between objects within the Near-field EM is difficult, imaging gravity is stranger, imaging nuclear force flux also difficult.

I never knew, science could be so distorted. He acts like he knows exactly what he's talkin about. I'm glad he's not my doctor. I don't know if he's just a true believer for willingly goes along with the the big lie. Our understanding of gravity can explain why an apple falls from a tree and how our planet orbits the sun. But when it comes to the most gigantic things in the universe - from galaxies on up - our current theories fail us. The leading contender for explaining why big things don't behave like they should is a theoretical substance called dark matter. But we've never directly seen it, and worse, it doesn't fully explain the mystery. There's a vocal minority that says dark matter doesn't exist at all. Instead, it's our understanding of gravity that needs tweaking. He's heard it in college. what people don't know or understand, they believe or know just want to fit in. Or just maybe he's an actor.

What about this analogy: Imagine a Motorbike running towards a curve. If you are good in physics, you can calculate when and how it will be flung out of the curve, but if you assume, that there's a rider on that bike, you know that he will steer it through the curve with ease.
Same goes for the life expectancy of the sun, the earth, humanity or even individual humans. If you assume, that there's a God managing all of this, you know that everything will be ok.
As for dark energy: A lot of things happen, that we still can't explain or even imagine. We see the effect, but have no idea how and why it works. Maybe God makes the universe expand directly, who knows?
Imo, the universe is a huge art exhibition, and we are invited to watch and look at it, admiring its creator.

A couple of vids ago the discussion stars collapsing, more specifically neutron stars. I may have misunderstood this but I thought he said that when the star starts to collapse, assuming more than 1 1/2 masses of our sun, the collapse is so fast that it was faster than the speed of light. Now, whether I mis-remembered that or not, I questioned how the speed of light is the universal speed limit but a star could collapse faster. Now he just said that the speed of light is the speed limit but space can expand faster, thus making things move faster than the speed of light. Maybe I did get the star collapse thing wrong but if not, now I understand it a little better. Thanks!

Does gravity really effect the expansion of space though? If all space at all times and all locations at all scales of size is expanding equally does space expand within everything and gravity just holds material and energy together or is it actually pulling the material and energy apart from itself in all directions. Also if space is expanding in all directions wouldn't that make you assume that space time in reverse would contract into a ball therefore making someone think it's a sphere whose internal volume is traversable?

As a teenager I recall reading science fiction stories in the pulp magazines. Isaac Asimov produced a monthly science essay in one of these publications. In one of those articles he mentioned that physicists had postulated that there was some strange energy source permeating space, but that it was not taken seriously by the scientific establishment of the time. The universe is more weird than we know or will ever know.

so we can hypothesise the big bang to be an expansion of a higher dimension. as humans are 3D objects who can only precieve 3D objects the expansion is percieved by us to be 3D and can be seen as the beginning of the space-time fabric. but it might be possible that in a 4D or higher plane of existance this is a common thing and can be easily explained.

Hi Phil, I absolutely a great fan of you but request you to slow down your rate of speech. Because these facts are new to us. Your speech clearly appears faster than the speed of light.
Thanks.

Does anyone else feel like the end of these videos, the -what have we learned today- segments make these video's tailored towards substitute teachers who. really don't know this stuff? =/

The scary thing about universal expansion is maybe space is already accelerating faster than light, but we don't see it yet. We see the galaxies but in reality, we are now alone.
