'Men were concerned that the presence of females would drive down wages. ' Well that did in fact happen and is still a factor for why wages are low, aside from greedy CEOs (many of which today are women) Feminism and multiculturalism (through immigration) have made Western capitalism a dystopian nightmare, not that these were necessary to make it so. And all of this happening in a society that is allegedly to this day predominantly 'Christian'. Our religion, economic system and lofty values of freedom and equality have all led to a living nightmare where the disappearance of tradition and ethnic homogeneity are met with 'good riddance' in a cacophony of sheep bleating. We march ever forwards to a cliff from which to fall and die from with the only serious form of hope and salvation stemming from deeds so deadly and terrifying one dare not utter them. Etc. Etc. Whatever dude, never mind.

-modern life- = -having the capability to cause permanent harm to the planet and environment all life shares-.
humanity has accumulated more waste, solid and gaseous, since the industrial revolution began (just a short 150 years ago, or so) than it had in its' entire prior existence. hundreds of thousands of years of living in harmony with mother earth, and each other.
modern life sucks, in that respect.
everyone is too caught up in -things- to notice life. -

Had never considered the definition of modern before, but you make such a profound point! While I have been learning from your videos, it has really made me think about how high we think we have risen as human beings, but when it comes down to it, we face the same vulnerabilities that people always have! We are just a short blip in the very long story of human history. Anyways, love the videos!

I genuinely had to laugh so hard about the -crisis in male varility- being blamed on -new women-. Sure, why not, emancipated women were turning men gay! That makes sense. While the struggles of oppressed groups for their rights might not always be as cooperative as they should be, uniting ethnic minorities, women, LGTBQ people etc, the oppression itself sure is intersectional XD

Also, as an answer to the epilogue: In Europe we often refer to these times as Modernity, because calling them modern can be confusing. When talking about Modernity, traits can be Modernist. Because we still live in times that try to weigh out Modernity, we call ourselves Postmodernists living in Postmodernity. Hope that helps out.

Great episode as always, although I would have liked for you to include how many women themselves did not want more rights as they were happy how it was. Not saying I agree with it, but that is not important, I think it is critical to mention it

I know you've covered women's rights and civil rights briefly through other courses, but if anyone is looking for course suggestions I think it would be awesome to have dedicated courses talking about the history of those movements.

Super proud of my uni right now, I go to Royal Holloway, a uni that open first for women and didn't open for undergraduate men until 1965, we are still mostly women and our new library is named for Emily Wilding Davison -

Don't forget that J. S. Mill was a utilitarian just like J. Betham, P. Singer and me (real me not Bismark. Utilitarians were among the first ones to promote an end to slavery, gender inequality AND animal agriculture.

Interesting you didn-t mention the fact that the sufferagate who was struck by a horse and killed bought a return ticket. Especially since it was you on an episode of mental floss that first brought that up.
