Every year, up to half the honeybee colonies in the U. S. die. Varroa mites, the bees ghastly parasites, are one of the main culprits. After hitching a ride into a hive, a mite mom hides in a honeycomb cell, where she and her offspring feed on a growing bee. But beekeepers and scientists are helping honeybees fight back

Rangers won on the biggest stage only to find the theater empty. Stop worrying about what others think! No other fan base cares about your inferiority complex. If you can't consistently shove losses down their throat you will end up with nothing. Footnote: One and done Atleast consistent winning gains you respect. Example: Astros. No matter how much they were hated! Look at the sad humbled faces of 2022 mlb announcers covering the playoffs. Finally with their wills broken and their mighty Yankees toppled again, they finally had to admit the astros are a great team. Going as far as saying the D word and not the word your thinking. Dynasty! My point is Winning is the answer to your problem! It only took the astros 7 years of dominance. Pounding loss after loss down mlbs favorite teams throat. Dynasty? I dont know or care but if I look for approval from other fan basses there will always be another qualifier. Enjoy your win and we'll see you next year!

For clarification if anybodys interested. The treatment for Verona mites in a hive is technically a pesticide, but its formic acid which is naturally occurring in the bees so you fill the hive with high quantities of formic acid which come in the form of strips the mites cant handle it, its uncomfortable to humans but The bees can handle it just fine. So, even though it is a pesticide, its not what most people would consider pesticide.

Towards the end of the video, I'm glad that humans are able to help out the bees but I guarantee that if these honey bees didn't provide any kind of monetary value to humans (i. e. honey, humans would care less about them. It's sad but true. The only reason I say this is because you know how some people only do nice things for you because they want something from you? Well, this is a perfect example of that! +=

There is actually another organism that preys on varroa mites. They're call book scorpions or pseudoscorpions. That's the natural way to defeat varroa mites. I don't know if Asian bees are compatible with European bees. If they are, maybe you could breed them together and possibly thereby giving protection from the mites to the offspring of that union.

We really dont need to consume honey. This is all due to the intensive domestication of honey bees. We just need to leave them alone and stop exploiting them and nature will balance itself. The mite is probably natures way to reduce honey bee populations which are decimating the other local pollinators.

I love these Deep Look videos and so do my young students. I show one of these every now and then and it sparkles so much awe and interest in the students and that leads to so many interesting class discussions. They love it. Many thanks.

I don't know about you but i always found Vorroa mites adorable with their round funny shape and stubby legs. The fact the other half of their scientific name is destructor is just funny when you look at the animal itself.

If you do your homework you'll find out that the knoefler family was responsible for bringing these mites to the US and all across America to California. The LA times wrote a good article about the knoefler criminals!

Why not import and/, or cross eastern lines with western ones? Theyre all Apis mellifera, no? Once you get those traits into a population, selection will probably do its work pretty fast.

The amount of satisfaction I felt when finding out HOW the bees began to fight the mites off is immeasurable. They deserve it SO MUCH fdffghjjg

This is disgusting! Imagine us humans had actual parasitic mites with a bee-mite ratio logic applied on us existing, disgusting!

Sometimes I feel like those bees. When you so busy with work that don't have time to watch for this parasites from governments.

If i had a nickel for every invasive/destructive species coming from china, i'd have a yacht and a mansion in Montecarlo.

Mite: It is my deepest hope that you, let me finish my job!
Bees: nice speech, say goodbye to your LEGS!

Thank you, for sharing. I hope this dream come true and we can get rid of the Varroa distractor. I hate it.
reply

missing info about the many many hives which were euthanised since they were suspected to be carrying the mite.
reply

Why is it that a problematic bug/parasite always comes from asia? How do they move from continent to continent?
reply

Whats the contribution of these mites to the ecosystem?
Do they really need to even exist for any good?

reply

god almighty really enjoys life simulator with the earth. creating new parasites and harmfull creatures.
reply

The essential oils from Salvia officanlis can protect bees against those mites. Read a study on that.
