Some of my first pets were newts and hermit crabs. in the same aquarium. husbandry was pretty bad in the late 70's early 80's. I don't even think you can buy a pet California newt anymore. maybe you can get a Japanese fire belly newt. but they were mostly replaced with fire belly toads in the pet trade.

We have yellow bellied newts all over salt spring island bc canada
My sons found one missing its front leg, we nursed it for 6 months inside our tree frog aquarium then let it go. Fun to watch it grow a new leg.
