What Happens When You Zap Coral With The World's Most Powerful X-ray Laser?

Some corals look like undersea gardens, gently blowing in the breeze. Others look like alien brains. But in their skeletons are clues that promise to give scientists a detailed picture of the weather from 500 years ago. Reading these bones? Easy. As long as you have the world's most powerful X-ray laser

By analyzing ancient climate, we can be better prepared for the climate of the future? I can't imagine how we can be better prepared for anything the future holds when contemporary humans are actively destroying both the climate AND the world's ecosystems.
What could we possibly learn from ancient coral and its weather conditions that could help us with that? Seriously. I want to know!

We love this show. My 5 year old and 3 year old talk about things like: How Daddy Long Legs aren't really spiders, crows recognize faces, and sharks can feel electric. It's kind of amazing what such little brains can remember and it's all because it is presented in an interesting way. Thank you!

This is something I need to show to my dad, he's one of those guys that thinks of he doesn't understand, then there's no way for anyone else to understand so he concludes it's all a political move. Climate change is just a way for NASA to make money in his mind lol

I'm actually surprised to study like that it might uncover the facts. Either way they might figure out some way to their advantage. Hey you know those Arctic ships the wooden ones that are trapped in the ice. How are they still trapped there?

Guys. Calling the SPEAR3 the most powerful x-ray source? It's sure one of the bigger accelarators and storage rings with electrons with 3GeV but it's on place #13.
Great video though.

Narrator appears to see climate as cyclical instead of linear across many centuries. Some say this is underrated. Truly, this is b. s, the ramblings of a diluted mind.

So when someone is growing a coral in captivity will it show the spikes in temperature the owner kept the coral In? Like a nanoclimate?
reply

More interesting topic than the recent episodes. Narration and editing is still better though. I suppose it came from experience?

Been around so long and then we come along and literally wipe them out.
The only thing they would tell us is to go away.

Now I need to wait for scientists to glance at the past by seeing reflection on other star, if that's even possible: D

Anybody else think this was going to be one of those guys with lasers that pop balloons shining it on his corals?
reply

Scientists: The coral reef is dying due to global warming.
Also Scientists: Lets blast it with lasers.

reply

It's terrible that the Great Barrier Reef is practically dead. Good job, people, we've messed up yet again.
