Here in Australia we have the Richmond birdwing butterfly, and it's caterpillars feed on the birdwing pipe vine. This plant has become rather uncommon.
Unfortunately there is another pipe vine, an invasive species called the calico Dutchman's pipe vine. It's very common.
The butterflies will lay their eggs on this feral species, they can't seem to tell the difference between this and the native species.
It has a 100% mortality on all the birdwing caterpillars that hatch and feed on it.
Because of this, habitat loss and drought, the Richmond birdwing butterfly is now a threatened species.
Luckily schools and environmentally responsible families are planting the native pipevine species and removing the invasive one. Hopefully this will boost the numbers of the Richmond birdwing butterfly so that it is no longer threatened with extinction.

Legit made me tear up so beautiful. Life is so interconnected and nature is full of these complex stories of codependence. It's remarkable that anything is alive at all and we got so lucky to have the wealth of biodiversity we do have. I wish people would see how important it is to protect this. As far as we know life is completely unique to earth and every species we let go extinct is a profound eternal tragedy.

OK so once I was working in the backyard cleaning up dead pumpkins Plants and I went inside To go chill and play video games when I Felt SomeThing brush against my hair on my neck so I look over and there's Caterpillar on my shoulder I have no idea how it got there so I just ran downstairs grabbed a Tupperware placed it inside and showed everyone and let it free

Speaking of caterpillars, I wonder if Deep Look has covered a video on aquatic/semi-aquatic caterpillars. I think that'd be a cool video considering there's not much videos here that cover about this. I've been wondering about this ever since I saw one in my aquarium some years ago.

Fungus gnats are annoying. I have a terrarium with moist soil in ot and fungus gnats have been being born in there. The whole house has them now and they seem like they wanna get in your nostrils on purpose

I have an idea why they get bigger faster when eating in social groups, having competition next to you might increase your rate of eating. I see it in so many animals.

Great video, it makes me think how many species do we, humans, extint. If we extint a little insect like the Fungus Gnar, we would end the plant and the butterfly too

I think the caterpillars are growing faster when they are more because they race for the food, hance they eat faster and grow more rapidly.
