Battery Life Calculator - How long will it power a circuit? mah Power: Your calculation assumes that the current draw of a load is constant current. This is true if powering a linear voltage regulator with an output voltage less than the cutoff voltage of your cells, but for most real loads, they are going to be either resistive (such as your LED and current limiting resistor) or constant power (say powering a switching converter to generate a constant output power to a downstream load)
In the case of resisitve load, the battery voltage sags and the current also drops proportionally. Generally a resistive load like a lamp will fade as the battery voltage drops, so it's up to the user to define when the performance of the device drops below a suitable level. A cheap LED or older incandescent flashlight is a good example. In the case of a constant power load, it would be better to use the watt hour rating of the battery and divide by the watts the load draws over the whole discharge period. As the voltage of the battery drops, the current increases. Pretty much any device with a switching regulator in it will work this way (high end tactical flashlights, higher power loads, higher power electronics)

Can I make a request for a video explanation? Or point me to a video that is maybe already out there.
I love your videos and they are so well made and easy to understand. I have been trying to understand why generators spin easier with no load, but when connected they can require more torque to spin. ( example a wind turbine will not spin in low winds, although the actual axle will spin at low torque without the generator attached. And what can be done to allow these generators to spin with lower torques.
Not sure if there is a term for this, but I think it has to do with Lenz's law.
If anyone could point me to a great video explanation, or one could be made that would be amazing!

Guess it all depends on where or when any of these carbon batteries were made including rechargeable ones too. purchased a sony cassette recorder at this second hand store, had batteries in it from the freaking 70s which to my surprise still had enough in them power up this device? Also have this 12v 7. 0 Ah YUASA (american made battery) purchased it in the 80s and believe it or not, this old portable power source which has powered up 4 camcorders over the years has never failed to hold a charge? Like here we are in 2021 and the passage of time has not affected it at all, for its just as good as the day it was first made.

There are so many factors that go towards limiting the amount of power you get to exploit from a battery. the ones I often overlook are temperature, and the rate of current draw (ie. higher draw impacts some cells more significantly, and non linearly. As you say, testing is more valuable than trying to guess from a data sheet.
PS. are you going to cover the Joule Thief circuit for getting the most out of non-rechargeable batteries?

Can you calculate how much energy a battery pack can produce if you only know
the battery type that is used,
the time it takes to recharge, and
how much amp and voltage the charging device has for output?
I have been looking to figure this out for a long time. Please help me out with this. Thanks

if the battery is a duracell, it may not last long enough to open the package, even though they are guaranteed for 10 years. Any damage they cause will need you to file a complaint, send in the products and wait for a settlement. Best route, don't use Duracell batteries, even with a warranty.

What if I don't know the mAh of a battery? Some sellers don't put this value to their batteries, and sometimes the place of this might be scratched or something. So, how am I supposed to know the capacity of the battery with my home tools? Is it possible?

I would WAG that like all things there are many variables but in general you would be lucky to get 80% of the maximum give or take 10%. Good information to know! Have a great day!

How a single battery in Quartz Wall clock lasts over an year or so? Similarly a TV remote two batteries last for years? How to calculate amperage in a circuit?

A Digital Multi Meter will tell you the voltage, but it depends on the load itself. Light load-long battery life. Heavy load - short battery life.

I've often wondered if there's a time constant for battery discharge like there is for capacitor discharges to more accurately calculate it.

Most of the batteries on the market have a fake battery capacity label. In the example, I assumed you used that value in the formula.

but battery voltage do drop when it discharged, so to maintain same power it will need more current. Better use WH instead of maH.

Does it mean if we decrease the resistance to increase the current, the number of hours that we can use the battery reduce?
