X-Men is an interesting idea in itself. But it doesn't work in a shared Marvel universe.
X-Men are feared and hated for being mutants, but Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor are seen as heroes.
It just doesn't make sense.

I think we can all agree that outside of the financial incentive to create new characters in the 60's and 70's, a lot of these character were in part created with the help of some columbian bam bam.

You could also arguably add Doctor Aphra to the famous character list, but she's probably lesser known, and she's part of the Star Wars universe, not Marvel's. Even though she was created by them.
