Scotland as a political entity, a state, was founded by a Gaelic King. The ruling class and the majority of the people were Gaelic, for the next three to four centuries the crucial period in the formation of a nation.
But this 27 minute video devotes only seconds to this seminal event. And even then the Gaelic basis is this process is only alluded to.
Its as if an English historian ignored 1066 and avoided the fact that the victors spoke French.
Typical really, modern Scottish anglicised culture always seems embarrassed about the Gaelic basis of Scotland. This national schizophrenia is probably why the independence referendum failed. How can you ever be a real nation state if you have this level of low self-esteem?

I-ve been doing my genealogy for decades and even though my family originated from the Azores, we grew up hearing that we also had some English and Scottish ancestry. Not only has DNA given evidence of this and the history of the Azores does show many immigrants also came from Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Brittany, etc, as well as Portuguese settled the nine islands of the Azores. I have recently found the names of my English ancestors in both the Azores, the US and England, as well as their burial sites, and am wondering if you know which exact areas and times in history that the Scottish immigrated across the world?

Sorry but this is not the true history of Scotland. You leave out much of the 14th to 17th centuries, one of the most dramatic and dangerous periods of the history of the country. Our continuous wars with England kings who wanted to dominate Scotland and make it a colony.
Scotland had no national debt after the Darien disaster only the aristocracy were in penury and sold Scotland to the English to recoup their money.
Scotland was sold for English gold against the wishes of the populace by around 100 rich men and there were many riots by the general populace.

I am always on the look-out for good programs like this on Scotland - the place of my birth. I am so proud of my heritage and have given my two daughters Scottish names, Allison and Mhairi. I left in 1948 and have never been able to afford to go back - but my spirit will fly back when I pass and I will be home again to Edinburgh and the beautiful surroundings of the places I remember from Coldstream in the borders to Peebles where I was born in 1943 during ww2. Thank - you for bringing this program. I am looking forward to part 2.

Am extremely proud of my Scottish heritage. Travelled there just before the pandemic. The beauty of the country was beyond belief and the people were quite gracious and welcoming. I look forward to returning to explore further. My dream would be to live there, but don't know quite how to go about all that. Plus, I'd be loathe to leave my doctors here.

It would have been nice if you had gone into greater detail about the atrocities committed by the British during the highland clearances as it's one of the key factors in the anti-English mentality which permeates the Scottish narrative. Having your language and culture banned by law and your family burned alive would have that effect on anyone after all

This account of the Darien disaster is leaving out the Spanish and English cooperating with one another to sabotage the Scottish effort to set up a colony. Climate played a part, but England and Spain made sure it failed! This telling of history is clearly skewed from a non-Scottish point of you.
