this video is not too bad, but fails to explain the real situation on the peninsula, the situation where the U. S is the real cause for tensions. the U. S has for decades refused talks that could could solve things peacefully, and that the U. S broke several deals it had with the DPRK. just like the U. S now is threatening to break the Iran deal for no reason. just like Iraq was perfectly solvable peacefully, the U. S rather rushed too solve it by force instead, if the U. S had changed its policy from -peace at the last resort- many wars could have been prevented.
western narratives wants to focus on false claims of human rights issues in North Korea yet the same the western regimes has no issues with human rights in countries they support. and even sells them billions in arms so they can continue to oppress. thus their entire narrative is false.

Thoughtful and far better than most supposed documentaries on the DPRK. I would disagree about old Japanese based fascism. The racial element of DPRK philosophy also applies to a great number of older generation south Koreans. Perhaps better to call it -race based socialism-. Myers has his issues as well. If you read his books you will find am awful lot of unscholarly animosity. Lankov offers better and more consistently unjaundiced insights in his books and articles. That small critique aside, well done.

you have taught me something, something that others do not mention. i'm sure some willingly. ive watched and read secondary sources from usa, sk, and japan (english only. and nobody, nobody mentioned the alternative tactic of promoting korean nationalism by the japanese. this makes sense bc in about 1% of sources i've read, they mention that the japanese, in ww2, wanted to create an -eastern counter- to the -western- dominance. and these are from the most trustworthy sources. it makes sense. thanks.

I also think people dont understand that staying in power in nk depends on how much the military likes you. I remember when kim jong un killed his top military advisors, the west simply interpreted this as an act of cruelty. There have been multiple snippets of information that imply that there be a constant power struggle going on, which is why kim jong un might not be able to change certain things that happen in his country

I'm sorry but it is not right to emphasize that Korea was influenced by japan throughout of history. Japan had much more Cultural influence since ancient period from Korea and China. From modern ages to today yes due to Japanese illegal colonization Korea's been influenced so much by Japan however, the truth is that all 3 countries exchanged numerous Impacts on their culture, Studies, Philosophies, people, and Cuisines.

North korea is not a communist state. It's more a continuation of the same isolationist chosun kingdom of the XIX century. An hereditary absolute kingdom, and their king is surnamed Kim. And a north korean has the same mentality of the chosun kingdom era. Isolationist. Nationalist. Proud of their lies. With castes. From nobles to slaves. With no changes of this caste system for generations.

As with much of American political thought, this video takes political taxonomy way too seriously. North Korea takes a lot of ideas from other Communist countries, put only to a point, you can't just call it a -Communist country-, or saying that North Korea is just the continuation of -Japanese Fascism-, whatever that means.

I wonder how much of the West's news and stories of North Korea is propaganda? Get real, the West also make use of propaganda! Don't get me wrong, I do believe it is a sh-tty country but that at least some of the stories of executions, unicorns, haircuts are totally manufactured by the West.

North Korea is a product of the cold war, it will forever be the last country to remain in the cold war if the US refuse to retreat from the peninsula and does not sign peace treaty with the NK.

One has to understand that there was no democracy anywhere in East Asia in the 1940s. Japan would only become democratic in the 1950s. South Korea and Taiwan only in the 1980s and 90s.
