A nighttime photo from space of the U. S. about 10 years ago showed lights of what looked like a large metropolis in North Dakota and a huge and crescent-shaped arc of lights south of San Antonio, Texas. I know for a fact there is no huge metropolis in North Dakota and no large crescent-shaped cities south of S. A.
They weren't city lights at all, but the flares from thousands upon thousands of fracking rigs!

The story of Aleppo and other places, where cities were destroyed by mankind is very sad. Apart of that it is obvious that absence of light is not a bad thing, like some people think. Night is night, therefore should be dark. We as humans are part of nature, therefore should live in the rythm of nature. The night belong to nocturnal animals, and light in the night is killing them.

It is sad to see how bright my region (the North of Italy) is. Light pollution affects both the environment and people's circadian rhythms negatively. It also looks like a massive waste of financial resources and energy. Can't companies create smart devices with sensors, or limit the brightness of street lamps so to use these resources more efficiently?

The map also represents the difference between poor and rich people. For poor people, there is darkness everywhere and their life goal is to find that little light to survive. For rich people, survival is almost guaranteed and their life goal is to find more light to thrive.

All these lights seem so magnificent and toxic at the same time. Its like a beautiful virus embracing the earth. I love the wonders of human kind and civilization. But you all know the dark stuff within.
