While, as a Persian, I am proud of the Achemenid Empire and how the ionians were taught a harsh lesson for messing with a large empire, I have to admit that Xerxes was a madman. If his madness and excessive pride hadn't gotten in the way and he had listened to his queen, Persia would have conquered all of Greece. And there probably would not have been an Alexander the Macedonian (i. e. great. Oh, well. It's all buried thousands of years in the past, now.

I doubt the Greek would have still become the cradle of Western Civilisation under the subjugation of the Persians. For such defiance the Persians would have burned much of Greece to the ground. Leaving it smouldering for decades to come. Whatever taxes and tributes levied onto the Greeks would have been brutal. Not a time to care about fine tuning many of the ideals of credited with Western Civilisation.

One of the most informative and beautiful videos about that extremely important battle.
I would put The Battle for Humanity in the title, bec Then and There the Future of our World was decided.
Would the new and radical notion of Freedom and Democracy survive and flourish (as it did? OR it would be eradicated as a chaotic system, with Absolutism and Tyranny would be the Dominant system to conquer the World?

Its absolutely hilarious to me that modern historians think these ancient people were liars For what reason would they lie? It wasnt for the common person most couldnt read. Its like in 500 years from now people then are going to say we lied about historical things except we are far more degraded than ancient peoples even though we like to believe were so superior that just isnt the truth

After the war of Troyes Dardanell ships had only the Dardane tribes who use the Ionian Sea, and later formed the Illyrian Peninsula, the Republic of Rome, the Senate and the Roman Empire The Latin alphabet which they developed from the Etruscan alphabet and that is the Albanian language which we speak it today in the 21st century, and from there the Western world developed.

please stop these rumors, they are not true at all, the Greeks did not exist at that time, the first Greeks came to the surface after the Byzantine era in the 9th century - the ancient Greeks were Pelasgians, so the Illyrian tribe, their language was Albanian, so it was time of the ILlyrian Peninsula, the time when there were no Greeks or Slavs.

I have a serious question if anyone could answer please? Coming from games like Total War and movies including ancient naval battles. How did these ships get away with only 10-20 infantry when boarding? I always thought they'd have way more on board for melee combat on the high seas? Thanks.

Motivation of free men combined with forward looking thinking beat unfavorable chances against tyranny and larger numbers without a cause. Salamis along with Thermopylae and Marathon is an origo for the free of us to reach back and look into the future with confidence against the odds.

We all know what would happen if Greeks lost that fight. If you are living in a western civilization you should now seriously doubt, like the author and narrator said. You should be grateful. Greeks changed your lives forever but it s much easier if you simply look away.

And here we have a great example of how women were actually capable to rule, but they were dismissed by males. In fact what Artemisia said was very smart, but fortunately for the rest of the Hellenes Xerxes was dumb enough not to follow her advice: )

Pride and impatience. gets 'em every time man. Xerxes had only to wait or listen to the queen's counsel and he'd have conquered Greece. ah well, he sounds like every husband thats gotten good advice from his wife and not heeded it.

if you ever find yourself on the Acropolis of Athens and look straight in front of the entrance to the Propylaia, you will see the straits of Salamis! A world monument that looks at the biggest event in its history!

The Ionian cities of the Persian Empire didn't rebel! They were attacked by greek forces who then withdrew after the Persian army arrived.
I guess that's history for you. It's different in everyone's perspective.

I had no idea northern Greece (Macedonia) was part of the Persian empire. Makes sense over 100 years later Macedonia got its revenge led by the greatest Greek leader in our history.

Poor king of kings. He ignored the wisest woman in his camp because she was a woman. Secondly, I wonder if Xerxes ever had astrologers along to read the stars and portents?

This wasn't the battle for Greece! This was the Battle for the whole world. If the Greeks had lost back then, the world would have been submerged into eternal darkness!
