A flawed system invented by a man named Karl Marx, which says that all people should be equal and thus be entitled to equal wages. To accomplish this, the government owns everything.
While this might seem appealing to some, it is important to remember that all attempts to implement socialism have ended in failure. Socialism has killed 100 million people in the 20th century alone.
In socialism you won't be allowed to own anything, your toothbrush will be confiscated by the government and shared with the whole neighborhood to ensure that everyone is equal. Because the government does everything, rather than the people who know what is best to do with it, socialist systems are always inefficient and unproductive.

The main reason why many Americans hate socialism is their hatred towards communist regime of USSR, Cuba, China, Vietnam and Chile.
The second reason is since the age of frontiers, USA feel threatened by rise of Socialism in American society coz according to some Americans, it might lead to violent insurgency.
Besides all this, most of the Americans believe that USA has become prosperous because of Capitalism, so this makes Socialism unattractive for them.

Became a dirty word when the first two colonies founded in America had hundreds die due to starvation because they operated on a communal based system. Nobody's willing to work for the other guy for nothing. It wasn't until the colonists were told they could keep anything over and above what they produced after sending what was due to the companies that sent them to America that they thrived.
Read the book the 5, 000 year leap by Cleon Skousen.

Socialism became a dirty word because of 100 years of unrestrained brutality and destruction of everything good within countries that acted in the name of socialism. Socialism is and will always remain a horrific concept to anyone with even one shred of historical and economic knowledge. It is abhorrent and so are those who wish for it.

That's simple to answer. In the 1950 the S. P. A. collapses and had forgotten Dobbs. The small groups that spawned up had no popular backing. The only socialist Americans knew was J. Stalin. Right how can you not love mass murderers? SOCIALISM is a cancer.
