Lincoln was told flat out that the Union -army- was not ready and he ordered it to go anyway. He did not know that the task of going into enemy territory and attacking an enemy army, which has the ease of movement of in their own territory, was by far the more difficult of the positions to be in, and was a perilous job.
It was Lincoln's fault because he thought that because they -were both green alike- it was an even bet. No, it wasn't. It was Lincoln's fault.

Lincoln underestimated the Southern spirit. Why would a nation that had slavery be so hard to beat despite everything going against them? Because it was about SO much more than slavery.
