MASSIVE WWII AIR BATTLE AT WAKE ISLAND - Biggest Battles of WWII John: I went to work at a Barbershop in Tampa, Florida, in 1988. It was me and three WW II Veterans. My boss had joined the Marines at 16, and ended up being a machine gunner in the 4th Marine Division. The barbershop was popular, so lots of WW II Vets came in, and remember: back then those guys were all 63, 65 years old! Well: one of our customers was a guy named James Olsen, and he had flown wildcats and Hellcats in the south pacific. Get this! At the battle of Coral Sea, He was coming back from a raid, low on gas, strict radio silence, his Carrier, the Hornet (i think? Its been years) was on fire. Procedure was: tilt your plane so eveyone below could see you were an American plane, then ditch it in the water. Well, Jimmy Olsen did just that. They (-They-) sent a launch out to get him, luckily unharmed. The Navy transferred him to the Yorktown, and the SAME THING happened to him at Midway!

A huge Huge advantage was changing the Wildcat to the Hellcat with more power and performance The Japanese got use to fighting the Wildcat And would tell other pilots how to fight a wildcat from its faults One that was very important that they told was the lack of climbing power So if you Ever fought a Wildcat climb And turn And it will stall behind you
When the Hellcat came Alot of Japanese pilots would do this move And be killed This went on for a good 2 months of Japanese planes being shot down before They caught on the Wildcat was a Hellcat

Such poor defensive tactics by the Zero pilots. As good as the Hellcat was it was not able to out turn the Zero.
With a Cat on your tail they needed to go into a tight banked turn which gave a much harder deflection shot and also the opportunity to force an overshoot if they closed in too fast.
Diving for the deck against an aircraft that weighed 2 tons more than yours was a recipe for disaster.

The USN's premium fighter in 1941 was the F4F Wildcat, just recently replacing the F3F biplane, and the Zero was the standard Japanese fighter. In 1944, the USN was running F6F Hellcats and F4U Corsairs, and the Zero was still the standard Japanese fighter. Truly, the Japanese had not the faintest clue what they were getting into when they bombed Pearl.

Wake Island is 1, 300 miles north of Truk and is west of Midway. This is the battle of Truk, Operation Hailstone, where the American navy obliterated Truk, sank everything in sight, and rendered it mostly useless the rest of the way. U. S. bombers then used it for bombing practice to prepare to attack the Marianas.

The Zero had no armor of any sort, and a water-cooled engine that did not take damage well. The Hellcats, with the P&W double-wasp air-cooled radials, had cockpit armor, self-sealing fuel tanks and a very robust power plant. It took some work to down one; where even a short burst generally decimated the Zero.

I believe that Alex Vraciu had victories over Japanese, German, Italian and Vichy French aircraft. The last three were during carrier support of the North African landings flying off USS Ranger.
He had a perfect combination of brashness and humility. I feel honored to have met him!

At that point in time, the Thatch Weave was not -classic-. Lt. Thatch had only recently worked it out because he was at a disadvantage flying the Wildcat which did not have enough power to best the Zero.

How did they figure they could dive away from aircraft that were twice as heavy? The Zero also had reduced aileron control at higher speeds. Poor choice of tactics on the part of the Japanese.

I made a mistake, it could not be Midway as we did not have Hellcats until 1943. But it does say Truk. Truk was out of range of battleship's guns so aircraft was the only way to attack truck.

Caroiline Islands and Truk are north of the Equator. why do these narrators always say anything in the Pacific as the -South- Pacific. north of the equator is the -north- Pacific!

not possible early in ww2 - the Japanese were pros - as even DF would show. But as time progressed vets were replaced with green pilots. Japan didn't have skilled reserves.

i fought the japanese at mamua old guinea. it was such a fearsome battle that i ended up sinking the whole island. papua new guinea is all thats left these days.

I have to just wonder what a pilot was thinking to take a float plane up there. He was probably just caught off guard though. It must have been a really bad feeling.

Imagine what the air battle over the Philippines would have been like, if thanks to MacArthur's genius most US planes hadn't been caught on the ground refueling.

He said they felt confident. I would hope. If you don't feel confident, you don't belong in the pilot's seat. And the Hellcat is a flying tank.

Great story! Minor problem is that it happened at Truk not Wake Island. Other than that, great! Looking forward to your next one!
