The story of Easter Island as a society that destroyed itself from within perpetuates common blind spots and shallow analysis that obscure the role that power plays in social and ecological disintegration. For people interested; the historical record is not settled about the state of the island and the Rapa Nui at the time of the first voyages there by Europeans.
Here is an account of the Rapa Nui from French navigator Jean-Francois de Galaup La Perouse who visited the island in 1786 The aspect of the island is by no means so barren and disgusting as navigators have asserted. the accounts given of the inhabitants appear equally incorrect. Instead of meeting with men exhausted by famine. I found, on the contrary, a considerable population, with more beauty and grace than I afterwards met with in and other Island; and a soil, which, with very little labour, furnished excellent provisions, and in an abundance more than sufficient for the consumption of the inhabitants. There is more recent scholarship that supports these observations and suggests that the Rapa Nui were living in a stable and thriving society up to and for sometime after the arrival of Europeans.

As far as I know, blaming the natives for the deforestation is the white man's story, as the rats aboard the visiting vessels would come to the island for the very first time through their ships. The rats would breed rapidly and spread like wildfire, eat the crops, the seedling trees, bushes and the planted coconuts and, directly influencing the deforestation and devastation of the ecosystem of the island.
The visitors brought nothing but disease, pests, death and false beliefs in both religion and science to the small island and totally toppled the nature and structure of the place, and ultimately left it for self destruction and a terrible end.
- Remember, back in those days, the developed people would treat skin irritation and rashes and all sorts of things with Mercury

This video shares misinformation and generally is in bad taste. I am Maori its important our culture is shown in appropriate cultural context - using words like cult and death is inappropriate to use in a title as it gives negative implication to a very wise and rich culture. Also the history talked in this video is out of date and degrading to the true (far more colourful) history and culture of Rapa nui. Would love you all to do your own research if this history interest you. Books like pathway of the birds and vaka moana are great starts! Or just look on Wikipedia. Its more likely to be up to date than this video. Please dont use misuse my culture as a way to get clickbait and views. Kia ora.

As Genghis Kahn never said, Inseminate as many birds as you can mate. You'll love it, they'll love, and humanity'll love it. Not wrong, one in every hundred men, descends directly from Genghis's Dick. Asked to comment, on the 80% of men, who never get a bird, he went on not to say, Phuck dem girly btchs. Let their DNA in, and we'll all die of mild-happiness, after becoming Big Phat Puffs of Pooiness. '
I think 'The Big Phat Puffs of Pooiness' might have been a punk band from millions of years ago.

Anyone here see the 1994 Kevin Reynolds' film Rapa Nui? Not especially well written, with uneven performances, but the cinematography and score were spellbinding, and I have to commend Reynolds for shooting on the actual island, rather than subbing the Azores, Canaries or some other easier location. It depicts the Birdman race for the tern's egg and it's exciting and suspenseful.

So, in short, the society was decimated by diseases from elsewhere on the planet.
Without claiming detail knowledge, I am very skeptical about the 'last tree cut down' story. That is possible but it is hard to imagine noone considered the implications of cutting down the very last tree, when society requires some wood. Sounds like a pat distraction from the first bit.

This reminds me of the time when America nuked the Bikini Islands. There is audio for sure and maybe video of General McCarhur I think. He relocated them and tried to explain the huge explosion was gonna happen there. They had no idea they would never return. It's hilariously sad.
Edit: neither knew about radiation or the effects on land.

Outside the visitors center at Orongo theres a mosaic depicting Manutara, the Sooty Tern. I was so taken by the story and energy of the image, I got the same symbol tattooed on my forearm before we flew back to Chile. Rapa Nui is a truly magical place, and I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to visit and see the Moai with my own eyes

All South Pacific islands are remnants of the ancient continent of Lemuria, aka MU. long submerged on the same day as Atlantis because of a thermal nuclear war between the two, in which the original sound was used as a weapon. Unleashing the aquafers of the world with terrible earthquakes that flooded both nations.

This is what the world has to look forward to. These tribesmen must have looked in awe at their technological ancestor worship prowess, until the last tree was felled. That very moment was when they were at their peak as a civilisation. This island is a metaphor for the entire human race.

I bet the swimming portion of the race was more like wading. Lower sea levels and tidal currents deposited material in the gap between the little island and the bigger island. You can see it in the shape of the crater. There had to be a lava flow or another geological event that occurred

The world should take notice. The self serving idiotic destruction of their world eventually destroyed the people and the culture of the island. The later contact with disease was just the last straw. Take note and learn from history - destroy your own to the detriment of yourself!

The rapa nui werent already weak from infighting and ecological self sabotage. They made highly productive rock gardens across the island and literally did not have weapons before the Dutch arrived. They hid in caves to avoid western slavers

If they cut down every single tree, they were probably over populated and in their way out one way or another. Terribly sad to lose an entire people, but its happened many times before, even without outside interruptions

wisdom of how we evolve, and our former selves die out as evolution changes.
is this the reason on stoking the fires of racism?
to prevent the change?
you know what happens when you f$%k with mother nature.

Its the same take away as always.
Capitalism will always eat itself to survive.
You must combine all systems into the best one possible
Or pay your children to eat themselves on the internet.
