Wolves and dogs do not usually procreate naturally, but when they do, the result is usually monster. It will have no natural respect towards humans, like a wolf, but no fear either, like a dog. These hybrids sometimes happen, and are shot as a matter of fact because they are too dangerous.
Now, consider that someone would breed these on purpose. Choosing a fighting dog, already bred for size and agression, and mixing it with a wolf. It would be completely uncontrollable, incapable of accepting humans as leader, having no fear whatsoever, and probably a hate towards cruel master. If such an animal would escape, it would be shunned by real wolves, still incapable of pack tactics against larger prey, and lacking skills to hunt small prey. But humans would be large enough and easy enough, not requiring a long chase, and its large size would make it even more capable of subduing a small human.

Why the lion theory is reasonable it has one major problem: lions are not big fans of the cold and France has been known to drop -40 F (not something a lion would tolerate. Several animals were considered suspects for the beast; hyenas, wolves, wolf packs, bears, lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, wild boars, different dog breeds even extinct species and werewolves. I did endless research on the beast of Gevadaun and nothing is capable of the appearance or abilities the beast had. Religion even stepped in and had theories saying it was a possessed animal or a demon. The archbishop of Gevadaun even stated the beast may be a punishment for sin.

A creature like this existed in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. My inlaw killed it in his yard. He is a hunting guide and knows his animals and hunts wolves. He could not figure out what he shot. He said it looked like a a wolf but was not a wolf. He said it was also mangy looking. (short hair) The fish cops told him it was a cross between a hyena and a lion that had escaped from a circus train derailment. Hearing this story makes me wish I had seen it. He came over for coffee and told us about it after the animal was taken away. We always thought the hyena from a circus train story was nonsense, but this video really stirs up my memories.

it was proven that the beast of Gevaudan was a large dog covered with the sides of a wild boar to protect him from the soft lead bullets of that era. The owner of the dog was a rich landowner who raped young children, there were children found half naked, raped and killed. He also killed anyone he felt could have been a witness and also to perpetuate the myth of the animal. The owner was a violent criminal who got away with rape and murder. There was no beast.

I read the book, No Beast so Fierce, about the Champawat Tiger, it killed something like 400+ people. When they killed the tiger they found that it had broken canines and an injured paw. The injuries made it to difficult and dangerous to continue hunting the standard prey, so it switched to hunting people.
Anyways all that said, I do think it could have been a singular animal, especially is the attacks stopped post the killing of the beast.

You know that saying about how significantly advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic (I'm paraphrasing). well this could almost be the same thing, in a roundabout way. An apex predator from a distant land, with no natural threats roaming free in what was essentially a very well stocked larder. They had no concept of what was hunting them and as such had no defense. I'm just speculating ofc.

I researched this case heavily a few years ago, this is a great breakdown of this in a 10 min video. I'd say multiple large wolves and the possibility of an escaped lion in poor condition (animals not exactly treated well back then. mange, lack of fur and physical abuse very common) might explain the descriptions given. Nice tight video.

Ok, but why didn't you mention with a single word the heroic fight of the Hawaiian Iroquois Samurai, who was trained in Kung-Fu, Karate, Muay Thai and Capoeira. Also possessed basic magical skills as a level 5 Indian Shaman. Who single handedly defeated at least 30 savages and only could have been stopped by a silver bullet himself.

Peasants weren't permitted to have firearms.
SHALL. NOT. BE. INFRINGED.
I need a 30-round magazine of the killingest ammunition I can get because I am not letting my family get eaten by a goddamn hellspawned horror from the blackest abyss.
God made man, but Sam Colt made him able to blast demons back to hell.

it could have been a lion or a hyena, but a dire wolf could have been a possibility and actually close enough to be recognized as a wolf visually even though dire wolves arent actually wolves at all, and a reddish coat with a black stripe could have been their coloration similar to dhole

Hi
The more attacks described the less I thought this was just some random animal. I think it was a serial killer that left the corpses out to be eaten by local wolfs, so the people would make up story around the attacks. Which happens all the time. Still to this day, in fact.

Recently discovered your chanel and absolutely love it! This is my fav so far and honestly feel like you should do more of these as everyone else who does historical cryptids always comes at it from a monster hunter angle while you discuss it like a true historian

2001 film Brotherhood of the Wolf seems to use this story as a basis for a great horror action movie w David Dacascos (martial arts actor plays Mani a Mohawk warrior w historical tattoos) Vincent Cassell, Monica Belluci & Samuel Le Bihan.

Adolescent male lion seems the most feasible taking into account the eyewitness reports, or even an hyena, considering the laughter cry mentioned in some eyewitness reports. Also because the peasants would be familiar with wolves.

It's so weird. I live in a place with so so many every beast. Grizzlys, wolves, cougars, wolverines surprising close. You name it. 400 people in my little mountain village. No one gets eaten. Maybe a serial killer with bizzare tools?

I find it funny how people are in deep fear of this yet unknown creature. Granted, any 'maneater' is ferocious and terrifying.
But to the 'beast' it is but a day to hunt, and we are but its next Meal. Nothing more.

there are documented cases of lions killing a similar number of people in other cases, were it a lion outside of it's natural habitat preying on humans doesn't seem too big a stretch

It was a hyena that escaped from a menagerie, probably a striped hyena. In India they are well known to attack, kill, and eat humans, especially children and small adults
