The irony here is that the do-gooders who in a misguided attempt to keep people with physical oddities from being able to exhibit themselves have actually harmed them. Years ago people with strange body characteristics could exhibit themselves and make pretty good money, some a lot of money! People are going to stare at them anyway, why not profit from it and maybe educate people about their condition in the process! Also, they were around other freaks and carnys which gave them comradery and kind of an extended family no doubt. Now the do-gooders have created a situation where it is no longer politically correct to exhibit, so people with serious deformities and the like are relegated to institutions and or government welfare.

The leasing of black people was pretty common and didn't go away till WW2 when it was seen as bad due to the potential propaganda value for the Germans when reporting on what happened in the USA. Here it is discussed in a way like it was rare, it was not. It was seen as worse than slavery as slaves would be more likely to be taken care of by the owners due to the high price whereas low cost rentals were disposable.

If you really look into the side show performers were paid really good back in the day. Barnum Bailey is accused now days of exploiting them but nobody else would hire them. I know I saw where the Camel girl made 100 a week back then that was like 500 or more now. we may not agree with it but it was a very good living for them when society wanted to hide them away. he put them in the spot light.

Good grief, the UK version sounds even worse than the US version!
