Alot or most people misunderstand shell shock but the cause is in the name SHELL SHOCK. The soldiers going into WWI went in with swords, single shot weapon that 2 soldiers shared, and horses all expecting to be home in a couple of weeks. They new nothing of the actual death and distraction they were walking into but what was the cause of shell shock is the bombs exploding. Shell shock is actual tiny nerve damage that happens when an explosive goes off too close to your head. The shock and vibration tears hundreds of little nerves in the brain and the soldier literally goes from ok to histercal to unable to control the own body. The government's didn't understand this then and many doctors tried many experiments. Also theses soldiers were called liars and put in jail or even sent back to the front believing that once the soldier knew he is like wasn't working then he'd snap out of it. U fortunately they were killed quickly either by the enemy, allies, or self inflicted. But there was ONE Dr that figured it out and his treatment was 98% more effective than ALL the others combined. This Dr got an entire floor of a hospital or building and blacked out the windows and trained all the nurses to work in near silent conditions and to talk at no more than a whisper their whole shift daily. Every soldier was given very strong sleeping medication, put into a comfortable bed, snuggled in, no lights, and no sounds. They were awoken every 6 hours to eat, use the restroom, bath, and re medicated back to sleep for another 6 hours. Each patient was given the dosage that he needed and personal care. They continued this routine every six hours until the patients brain healed. The sleeping, dark, silent was literally wound care. So if you have surgery they say it will take six weeks for the site to heal all the way from inside to outside completely. Well this is exactly what the Dr was doing to these shell shock victims. Dr was caring for the patient and his wound being the ripped nerves from the explosions shocking their brain and the vibration tearing the nerves. So it took about six weeks for each patients brain to heal. The sleep dark silent was done because they didn't want to stimulate the brain at all. They wanted it to do nothing but heal. And this treatment worked!

My grandfather knew my Great Great Great Great Grampa Robert, who was a Union soldier and fought in the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Papa Robert had a friend who also was a Union soldier who also fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. He said Papa Robert went to an event for Civil War veterans. Papa Robert's friend had SEVERE shell shock (PTSD) and was TERRIFIED of the other veterans giving twenty-one gun salutes with their muskets. He started crying from terror when shown a picture of the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg and his old kepi. He left when someone fired an old cannon.

War should be banned by all countries. To have war or violence in one's memory bank is abhorrent and horrific. I've known a number of WWII vets who never want to bring up the subject.

The bad part about this is what the families have to go through once they get home. A lot of times they have to put them away because they can't deal with them!
