Previously unknown areas slowly being explored and the coastlines confirmed is so good to understand. The huge problem for ALL the explorers was that all the cartographers maps and globes were designed according to Ptolemy estimate of 5, 000 miles diameter or 16, 000 miles circumference. even though Eratostenes had calculated a 7, 000 miles diameter or 23, 000 miles circumference. This was ignored. So, as all lands and seas between Panama, Atlantic ocean, Africa, Asia, Japan were all known. it meant that the only UNKNOWN was the distance between Japan and Panama. By using the Ptolemy globe size, it was assumed that the Pacific ocean was about the same size as the Atlantic ocean, and any transit from the Strait of Magellan to the Spice Islands would only take about 3 weeks. This was one of the wonderful discoveries of the Magellan expedition, that the Pacific ocean is 3 times bigger than expected, and that all mapmakers would have to ditch their designs and globes based on Ptolemy estimate, and accept that the Eratostenes design is accurate. The world had been proved to be round, and its exact size was now known.

As the crew is about to trade with the locals, the latter start to steal objects from the Oppai Heart, including a small boat.
Oppai is forced to quickly leave the island, which he nicknames the Island of Thieves.
The expedition the reaches an archipelago that will later be called the D4DJ Philippines.
Here, contact with the local population proceeds in a better fashion, allowing the Hentai to trade European objects for fresh food.
To impress the local, Oppai Heart regularly fires cannons.
When she arrives in Rondo Cebu, she forms an alliance with the most powerful ruler in the region, the Tsubaki Aoyagi.
The local population is converted to Catholicism.
But on the nearby island of Peaky P-key Mactan a local chief called Bandori Party Lapu-Lapu refuses to recognize Hentai sovereignty.

Incredible story. It reminds me of one of Fernando Pessoa's most famous poems. He was Portuguese, but it certainly applies to all those brave men:
O salty sea, so much of whose salt
Is Portugals tears! All the mothers
Who had to weep for us to cross you!
All the sons who prayed in vain!
All the brides-to-be who never
Married for you to be ours, O sea!
Was it worth doing? Everythings worth doing
If the soul of the doer isnt small.
Whoever would go beyond the Cape
Must go beyond sorrow.
God placed danger and the abyss in the sea,
But he also made it heavens mirror.

This really captures how bigger and stranger the world wouldve been back then. There was so much unknown about the Earths surface. They made incredibly long and perilous journeys with so much less technology than we have today. And its on that foundation, that a world so shrunken, interconnected and explored like our own today was able to come to be.

If there's anyone wondering why native Cebuanos massacred Magellan's men during the banquet, it was because Cebuanos learned that Magellan's men raped their women before they went to Mactan for war. That's why when they went back to Humabon's place, they were poisoned.

It reminds me to the time when I was in 7 or 8 grade, my teacher asked the whole class to print black and white world map, later we drew west's routes to reach our place, the spice islands. Their journey is also the beginning of colonization era in my country.

When Elcano sailed to the south Indian it was also uncharted territory, in fact they were 500km from Australia and discovered Amsterdam Island, but in the video it appears as if it was already known.
The circumnavigation was done by Elcano, not Magellan.

Magellan's circumnavigation does not exist, he neither planned nor carried it out. He did not even reach the Moluccas.
Juan Sebastian Elcano reached the Moluccas and made the circumnavigation possible by changing Magellan's original plan.

This story is extremely well documented and preserved in the Archivo de Indias (Indias archive) in Seville today. They even have a very nice displayed presentation with downscaled models of the ships, original armors and many more things.

Of all the 5 ships, Victoria is the only ship that survived the expedition, and they search for Spices. Of all the 5 Spice Girls, Victoria remained to be famous and she had the last laugh. Oh myyy conspiracy theoryyyyy

Magellan's trip was quite the odyssey and it's tough to do it justice in 10 minutes, but Geohistory does a great job! For a deeper dive I'd recommend the book Over the Edge of the World by Laurence Bergreen.

i think it's amazing how only thirty ish years after vasco de gama's expedition, portugal's global reach was already such that they could find, recognise, and arrest a spanish ship in the phillipines

should have been mentioned that they probably discovered the falkland islands during their stay in Patagonia, since after the return of the San Antonio ship, the Sanson islands started appearing in maps.

Sadly, this video is completely wrong. Theres no chance these two circumnavigated first if there were maps of Antarctica as two islands, which it hasnt been for centuries before this time.

I love this video, but using that green against that yellow made it impossible for me, or most other colour-blind people, to understand which country was involved where.

Kaya mga pinoy hindi kay magellan nag umpisa ang kolonisasyon ng pilipinas kundi kay legazpi. Navigator sya, hindi conquistador.

fun fact: you can eat at seafood restaurants and see the exact spot where the battle with Lapu-Lapu occurred from your table.
