Hey, folks! Today we are going to dive into a disturbing topic that is rarely discussed and mostly left out of history books: Human Zoos. Most of you probably had no idea such a thing existed, and you cannot be blamed for it. It is certainly easier to forget than to remember and to face the shame of this abhorrent practice. One of the first people to host a human exhibition was a man called P. T. Barnum. Back on August 11th, 1835 in New York City, he displayed a woman, named Joyce Heth. He presented her as the 161-year-old woman and claimed she was the former slave of Augustine Washington, George Washingtons father. She was said to have raised and taken care of the future president George Washington. None of these claims were true, but regardless, the exhibition was a huge success and attracted the attention of thousands of people. Thousands of people from Asia and Africa were put on ships and brought to Europe and the United States to be displayed in human zoos. Some of the people to be displayed were enslaved, while others were deceived with false promises to board the ships. Needless to say, those promises were under-delivered or were a complete scam. Once they came to the New World, what awaited them was a recreation of their natural environment, in which they were made to display their customs and way of life. The poor living and weather conditions made many of them sick and weak. If one of them died, the body was buried in the zoos garden, without the proper ceremony being observed. Sounds horrible? You havent yet heard even half of it

I've been thinking about this recently. If you were approached by an alien with an offer to put you in an enclosure to be looked at as an example of a primitive, non-spacefaring species, would you consider it? Assuming you are fairly compensated, i. e, you were provided for and got access to advanced medical care, got to see the universe beyond our little solar system, and were generally kept safe, would it be worth it? For how long? Would you try and take your family? Or would you bargain for them to be provided for after you left? I'm assuming they wouldn't want you telling anyone else, so if you refused they'd either wipe your memory or do something to discredit you.
I personally wouldn't want to go as I have people I wouldn't want to leave behind, but this is assuming you get a choice at all, and that's kind of the point of the hypothetical: at what point does it stop being exploitative? Is there any agreement you could make with the person on display that makes it fair, or is the nature of such an arrangement inherently degrading? Or can you ever really know what you're agreeing to, even assuming the people who want to make the display deal with you in good faith?

What caused human evolution up to the level of western civilization separated from empire (the consent of the governed, i. e. a constitutional republic? Any of those actual spiritual and moral principals that we brought to these shores from Europe were developed separately and apart from any imperial and/or ideological desire.
And yet it wasn't a clean break. The ancient and cruel system of empire clung to us with all it's might. Even as it has been clear throughout our history as a nation at many intervals that it was the evil of EMPIRE that we sought to shed and dispose of culturally/morally.
Because of the success (if imperfect, but successful) of this great American experiment, the whole of humanity is now a self evolving species.

I am so grateful for this video.
I knew human zoos were a thing but I hadn't examined the idea since a few years ago I figured out 'hey I'm acting like a racist - omg the white supremacy is coming from inside the house' n took steps to be a better listener.
_holy cats_ this was a blatant expression of white supremacy that's been horrifically overlooked by a lot of content creators. It reminds me that we are nowhere near ripping out the stain of genocidal ideology from our society.

A year ago I was sad and disgusted to learn of the existence of human zoos as I never learnt about it in schools! It was appealing and disgusted how biased and racist these people were to think and see this poor innocent people inferior and closer to animals than humans which is absolutely wrong! But unfortunately this mindset is still alive today and unless we educate people about the horrors of the past and embrace equality then I'm afraid this event will repeat again

People being used as an exhibit still happens in Thailand with the Kayan people. They have thier villages set up as an exhibit. They are owned privately and its the only source of income for many. Tourist pay an entry fee (only a small part of the money goes to those who live in the villages) and the Kayan people try to sell souvenirs for more income. It's seen by some as the only thing they can do to survive as a culture. Many see it as both a good an a bad.

This is a well known topic here in Australia. A great many indigenous Australian aborigines were taken without their consent and displayed in London. Some of their bodies ended up in the London museum. Even now, the skeletons of dozens of people are in boxes in the archives of the museum. Some have been repatriated, but far from all.

That is insane to me that things like this really happened. Maybe one day there will be a video about people killing sentient whales that will shock people of the future like i am shocked by this.
Edit: i am not comparing humans to whales at all.

Are human zoos so different to how some of these tribes would treat a single white person who showed up in their village?
Im NOT justifying it. Im just saying that this is a human trait, not a white European/American trait.

this would much more interesting with more info on the rather disturbing topic. but you now what's not fun is listening to you moralizing the whole time. We get you are anti human zoo, wow how noble

This is why people are so scared of Wokeness. If people know the truths of the pass a lot of racist BS would stop. Its not about blame its about making sure it doesnt happen again.

I once went to Epcot center - there were copies of indigenous people buildings, and their inhabitants were dressed in their local costumes. Like France, Italy. Horrible!

I love seeing pictures of people not in a degrading way, more so than that of nature. I have a genuine love for people, does matter what race they are. I love people!

I'd also be interested in the history of displaying humans with physical deformities and so on. Which obviously still occurs in many parts of the world.
