Ten Minute History - The Late British Empire Short Documentary DSoDragon: Well the idea of India was ever-present, the sepoy mutiny failed mostly due to the maharajas not allying into a unified force and there being no definite leader of such an alliance.
The Marathas, The Mughals and even ancient Indian kingdoms like the Gurjara- Pratiharas, Magadha, Cholas always tried to unify the region.
In fact instead of uniting the country, british colonialism only sought to divide the land as much as possible to make it easier to rule.
The idea that the British were responsible for uniting the Indians is actually propaganda started by British trained Indian intellectuals and the Raj-sympathizers. in a bid to undermine the unity of a post independence India!

Very well narrated and presented, thank you. I cannot understand why people think the empire was a civilising force. It was a piratical and malevolent force which has left hotspot the world over, Kashmir, Palestine, Gibralta, Ireland, Cyprus, Falklands, etc. India had an advanced civilisation when the Brits were running around in forests with faces painted blue, and Britain stole 45 trillion dollars from India. The Brits wiped out many peoples in NZ, Australia, Canada, America, Africa, etc.

Technically the empire did not end in 1997 and Britain still has colonies on every continent (now rebranded as British Overseas Territories) and the sun still never sets in these territories.
Many of these territories consist of only small communities, often isolated from the rest of the world, but places such as Gibraltar, Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Ascension Island and the Falkland Islands are still very valuable for the military as they act as excellent land for power projection.

I ( eventhough a Pakistani) think that they were infact a civilizing force. I can say for sure that without them India would have seen WAY MORE blood shed, way less education and industrialization aswell as technology. Would be way more decided and maybe even still a backward society but Britain were certainly less successful in other areas such as the middle east which is almost entirely their fault

Ireland did not [become] an independent republic in 1922. It became the Irish Free State, essentially no different from Canada or SA etc. It formally became an independent republic in 1949. And I believe its worth distinguishing that it wasnt the whole of Ireland; this distinction is what led to huge bloodshed in Ireland (not the Republic, but in the six counties of Ireland in the north.

Gotta say, the way this guy encapsulated (most) of the very complicated causes for the war of independence independence in about 6 seconds never ceases to amaze me. Ye he missed out on some points mostly related to how the poor were treated but we can forgive that
Also i don't think calling nawabs as Cheifs is very accurate, i think Duke would fit more

Fwiw, I was talking with a British friend of mine, and she said she remembered the moment when she realized Britain was just Britain and not Great Britain anymore. By the time the British handed over Hong Kong the empire had been over for decades, a lot of historians mark its end as when the US forced the British to relinquish the Suez canal.

So I guess this means China holds the title for ending the British empire hooray I guess although America and the ussr kinda played a part in it as they basically told the uk and France to give there colonies independence or tell theirs colonies to rebel against them if they refused
reply

Colonialism be like:
Natives: oh cool, foreigners! We're gonna trade, practice cultural exchange and become best friends.
Colonizers: We're gonna take your land, your food, your riches, your power, your artifacts and, you know what, we're just gonna take you as well

reply

So. british did a series of Holomodors (irish, bengal) but have better marketing to silence it. Difference is Stalins one happened due to inefficient central planning policy and british ones ocurred by actively withdrewing the scarce supply.

One lesson the United States should have learned, but I'm not sure that we have, is: NEVER get involved in another country's civil war! And of course, after the Spanish - American War, we had many island colonies we took from Spain.
reply

The British Empire always felt to me like a thing of centuries past, like the wooden sail ships, single-shot muskets, and coonskin caps. It's a bit of a shock that it really only started dissolving in the 50s.
reply

Don't forget all you modern thinkers that believe colonialism was so terrible, the British Empire was bankrupted and had to give back its colonies because it stood alone against Fascism and saved Europe!
reply

Small mistake: Ireland did not become a Republic in 1922, it became a Free State. It was a dominion of Britain, just like Canada. It wasn't until 1949 when Ireland became a fully independent Republic.
reply

Well, fwiw, i think it's pretty hard to claim Britain was a civilizing force since everywhere they went they went they wrought death and destruction on the civilizations that were already there.
reply

Imagine if the Dutch kept their colony in New Jersey and made it New Sweden and we able to retaliate against the British and take north America. Would the American revolution still happen?
reply

2: 10-2: 13 except for a small group of islands near Washington which almost led America and Britain to go to war because the shooting of a pig.
Oversimplified made a video on it

From one imperfect nation to another, us Yanks love you Brits. I consider you family like any of my fellow Americans. Also feel the same way about the French: P
reply

Leave it to the British empire to somehow offend the two dominate & rival religions in India and semi unite them both in mutual hatred against Britain
