Ten Minute English and British History #12 - The Conquest of Wales and the Birth of Parliament Adrian: RE: The Prince of Wales. As a child in school I was taught that after the last Welsh prince (Llewelyn) was killed fighting the English. The king of England said to the Welsh people I will give you a prince who speaks no english and his baby son was given a Welsh nanny. Hence the hereditary title. HOWEVER I have since learnt that Llewelyn's wife was pregnant and gave birth to a girl. The English stole the Welsh princess and put her in an English monastery, where she lived and died unknown. Oh common here. Telling this story without presenting the role - the FOUNDATIONAL ROLE. - of the Solomon League And Covenant, the National Covenant, what they were all about and who were the Covenanters, why they fought, what were the killing years is to not tell this story at all. You left out nearly all the most important and foundational information behind the ECW. Really? Sheesh.

There is some confusion about the Welsh longbow men and the longbow. The longbow itself was not Welsh as it had been around for centuries and was found in other parts of Europe. What was important with the Welsh longbow men was the fact that they used them on mass rather then scattered throughout the army. Thus giving them a greater impact on the enemy.

I just learned today that JFK'S nephew who is an actor, would be the Prince of Wales today if we're gonna follow absolute primogeniture. His name is Christopher Lawford. I tried tracing it and that's what I discovered. I guess all of us are connected cuz that guy is an actor, and JFK's nephew. Pretty cool coincidence.

Wales was never really conquered the normans just built castles all over the place if Wales was truly conquered the first thing that would have gone is the language and it didn't. And ofcourse in 1492 I think the Welsh conquered England and put Henry 7 on the throne

Here is to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd. Llywelyn the True Heir to Wales. Grandnephew of Llywelyn the Great. Llywelyn the Last. Llywelyn the First Prince of Wale. Llywelyn the Promised. Llywelyn the Betrayed. Llywelyn the Rightful Heir Apparent of the British Throne.

The history of Welsh railways is similar to Wales itself. Fragmented independent companies, then consolidation by the English (1922, more consolidation (1948, and finally a little bit of independence, though still effectively a part of England.

I come back to this video just for the nigh on unpronounceable dig at the Welsh language. He then does a great job to my American ears of correctly pronouncing all the various names. Although wish that the huge long named town had more prominence.

5: 52 The joke that the Welsh dont need (as many) vowels it would be more accurate to say that English doesnt recognise the obvious vowels w and y that the far more sensible Welsh do. English suffers from unnecessary vowel deprivation.

I had to go back after watching the entire episode to freeze frame Batman and Robin scaling the castle wall, just so I could see your interpretation of them. I appreciate how you managed to capture Adam West's jawline with your art style.

Llewellyn fought off the English for ages. They were eventually starved out by the English stopping anything getting in or out and he didn't want to see everyone die so he surrendered. That's what we were taught in Wales anyway.

The flag of the United Kingdom has the cross of St George and Two diagonal stripes. One is for Scotland and the other Northern Ireland. Wales has no stripe a source of constant pride for the Welsh.

That cavalier attitude toward vowels has been the main undermining point in Anglo-Welsh relations throughout the ages, that and profanity-infused tit-for-tat when rugby matches are being played.

Are there any group of people today that is directly distended from the original native indigenous people of the island of England I'm sure the BBC would want you to think that it was brown people

This whole situation is double crazy because the Henry Tudor kings got the throne by being backed by the Welsh, the Tudor ancestral home was the village of Penmynydd in Anglesey, North Wales

I'm sure that someone has already said it, but I died laughing when reason #2 for not discussing Welsh anything is essentially due to no one knowing how to pronounce any of it lolol!

There was no political nation called Britain until 1707. Its wrong to say the English invaded after this point (the Welsh and the Scottish did nicely too, but before they did.

Edward I Longshanks is still distantly related to the Anglo-Saxon kings, thanks to Henry Beauclercs marriage to Edith of Scotland who was Aethelred IIs granddaughter.

I feel it's interesting to note that where the English mostly took control over, the south, is the part of Wales that speaks less Welsh whilst the north speaks more

7: 40 Interesting choice of image for Parliament, using the opening scene of the Bayeux Tapestry, which was the coronation of Edward the Confessor.
