How did the World React to the American Civil War? Documentary
video description
Also, i hate the map most people use to depict the territorys of the civil war. What we call Oklahoma was not Oklahoma at the time, it was Cherokee territory, and the Cherokee fought on the side of the Confederacy because they were offering the Cherokee sovereignty, and even statehood. The territory of Oklahoma belongs to the South, not the North. N. /S. Dakota also belong on the Neutral side, as that was Dakota territory, as in the Dakota Natives. (Like the Sioux) and they didnt take part in the war. New Mexico was part of Texas, Lincoln attempted to steal land from the state so he could bolster the amount of states that were fighting for the Union, so that was the confederacy looked like nothing more than a bunch of rebels. Fun fact thats why Texas joined the Confederacy, also fun fact, Texas technically wasnt a part of the confederacy. By that i mean it wouldnt have joined the CSA. When marking by color Texas should probably be a color of its own, as it was just fighting to keep its territory which had already been cut in half and Lincoln was purposing even more cuts. Officially Texas planned to strike out on its own again. It allied with the confederacy to protect its own interests, but likely would not have stayed with the confederacy in the end.

Basically, if the south had won most of the super powers would have not been to happy but not willing to start war over it. Also just to be clear, the majority of the Irish who left did not do so to fight for the union, but to escape the absolute brutal treatment and famine along with genocide by English supporters and English oppression, it was better to fight in a civil war then to stay in Ireland and either starve to death, die of hypothermia, murdered by English, or to betray there faith and there culture. America excepted everyone, even if they were treated as lower then slaves and not human it was still better then the alternative. That says a lot about what it must have been like. England had enough food to feed every single person on Ireland but instead decided to give it to there own healthy people, block all imports to Ireland and seize all exports of value but still maintain complete control over the island. How can they begin to justify this. Its been a common theme for a thousand years, my parents left in the 1970's after both uncles were killed by English soldiers, Belfast was a bad place. BTW they were 7/and 9 years old. this is why people joined the IRA for revenge, not so much politics, all while the world sat back and watched it on TV and did nothing to help. OK I'm done.

The US wouldve destroyed a lot of European powers even at that time. Europe really slept on the USA. 50 years later those same countries were yearning for American involvement in WWI and they werent even considered to be on Britains and Frances level but they knew deep down inside America had the better economy and can probably amass more military equipment and soldiers because they had the economy for it. Britain and France they were just old news and overhyped in WWI and couldnt beat Germany together. Europe had a good taste of humble pie.

fine documentary, funny caricatures! one slight inaccuracy though: slightly more than 50% irish roman catholics fought for the confederacy! i am a history major who graduated from emory university in atlanta, georgia! many people do get this fact wrong! my ancestors are from ballymena, northern ireland where they arrived in 1850 first to philadelphia and then to savannah, georgia in 1852! the prisoners of war from the union and the confederacy had many irish accents! my first name is pronounced kee-veen!

Don't forget San Marino offering an Alliance to support the Union and they also sent Lincoln a sweet letter, and giving him honorary citizenship.
Lincoln's response was: Although your dominion is small, your State is nevertheless one of the most honored, in all history. It has by its experience demonstrated the truth, so full of encouragement to the friends of Humanity, that Government founded on Republican principles is capable of being so administered as to be secure and enduring.

What would be really interesting to see would be the reaction of most of Africa's pre-colonial kingdoms to the American civil war. I want to know how the press was treating the war in the Kingdom of Benin (sovereign until 1897, Kongo Kingdom (sovereign until 1914) and the Kingdom of Dahomey (sovereign until 1904.
I also think it would be pretty interesting to hear how the press were treating the American civil war in the Tokugawa shogunate (lasted until 1868) and the Qing Dynasty.

The cause of the war was not to maintain the union or end the institution of slavery, the war was started when the south seceded citing their intent to preserve the institution of slavery under the growing threat of federal abolition. They said so in their articles of secession, which was in-and-of itself an attempt at rebellion, one which was then tramped out.

Napoleon III was hot to intervene militarily on the Confederate side, but only if Britain would fight along side as an ally. There was strong pro Confederate sentiment in the House of Lords but overwhelming pro Union sentiment in the Commons. The Brits and the French sat it out and made millions supplying the South with armaments. Deo vindice!

The part about the Ottomans is not quite correct. The cotton came from Egypt, as shown on the map in the video. But what's not explained in the video is that by that by that point, Egypt was essentially independent from the Ottoman empire. So I don't think the Ottomans got much, if any, of that money.

I remember my military history teacher talking about how Europe didn't pay much attention to the american civil war and thus missed the most important lesson: that rifling had made defense significantly stronger than offense and that perspectives and tactics would need to change accordingly.

Fun Fact: The democrats in the south wanted to spread slavery to the territories. The republican party was founded to stop them. An although the war official ended and the 13th amendment was enacted, the democrats have been trying for over 150 years to get their slaves back.

During the newspaper scene, i think the Amateurs -Chinese Ambassador is a reference to the Taiping Rebellion, which was happening at the same time as the US Civil War, but the Taiping Rebellion is most bloodier than the US Civil War

For those wanting to learn more about this, I recommend Empire of Cotton by Sven Beckert. It's basically a history of cotton, and it has interesting stuff about how the disruption of the cotton supply chain impacted the rest of the world.

why do you even make history videos if you insist on putting such blatant bias in them? the british loved the confederacy especially once the catholics started fighting for the union. the british wanted nothing more than a confederate victory

If I was the king of Great Brittian I would have used my restoration of union cb and declared on both of them once they had worn each other down for awhile or immediately after the war.

Two things determine any war in the beginning. 1st The support of the troops and the people. 2nd Logistics. If you have these two things you are dominant.
