Why did Britain Build Nuclear Weapons? Documentary

Britain was third in the race for nuclear weapons. Unlike the much more famous process of development in the USA or USSR, Britain's programme and reasons for developing such weapons is barely understood. So how and why did Britain develop them?

I know the format is time-limited but I still think this left out way too much detail. A few more sentences about the mistakes made would've been enlightening. The British nuclear weapons program was an absolute debacle from top to bottom and irradiated part of the British countryside through its reckless, unsafe, and inefficient enrichment program. If not for a few brave men it could've been much worse (think Chernobyl but in a landmass the size of the UK, and they never got the recognition they deserved.

The UK Tube alloys were leading the world on nuclear weapons along with Canada Joined the USA to Finish off the Project and Built the First Nukes as equal Partners
In 1945 the USA signed an agreement Not to use these weapons on each other Share the Technology or use them with the approval of the Other two this proves the UK built these Nukes in 1946 Canada withdrew giving the UK all its information

Earnest Rutherford's workings years and years before were made by a Great British scientist.
They yanks wouldn't have made anything without Rutherford's research whatsoever, neither would they have broken Enigma without us, or the sound barrier or reusable HOTOL automated orbiter

The flippant (and inaccurate) remark about Australia being a colony while Britain was developing their bomb is enough to make me dislike this video. There was an opportunity to have a nuanced comment about why Australia actually agreed, but it was glossed over for no good reason.
reply

Australia was not a British colony at that time, and had been independent and self governing since 1901, Australia was not all about self interest like the US but was smart enough to realise a powerful Britain was good for the Western World and Democratic Nations.

Also, return to isolationism? You mean after WWI, Spanish-American war, Phillipine-American war, Boxer Rebellion, you mean that isolationism?
. I love your videos so I'm pretty stoked I get to insult an error of yours

reply

your wrong we had to give usa radar secrets and nuke secrets before they would join the war, tell the truth dont brush over history, we had to give america all our best material before they would consider joining FACT.
reply

Must clarify that Australia wasnt a colony at the time it kind of sounds like thats what you are saying, they were previously a collection of colonies much like the US but had peacefully succeeded much like Canada
reply

Hi all. Just to correct myself. I used the term colony to describe Australia. It was actually a Dominion at this time which was a different status. I was just being flippant but I should be a bit more careful.

Doesn't surprise me, British are some of the smartest people in the world. Look at what they have achieved and invented.

How the UK got to test nukes
England: We need to test nukes on you Australia, we promise some nuclear power in return!
Australia: Oh yeah England nuke me daddy!
England: .mmmk

reply

It was an Italian, who started it, Enrico Fermi working in America, then obviously the USA used it for war, which was not the agreement. England had good ties with the USA, so no surprise.
reply

You completely overlooked that the US developed a fusion bomb and britain had to make a super expensive A-bomb packed with extra stuff that they would pass off as a H-bomb.
reply

Typical American's. douching on deal's. that's why alot of people around the world. Do not trust them. They only want to deal with you if you got something and they haven't
reply

Fun fact the first nuclear bomb dropped on Japan nearly had to be delivered by a Lancaster bomber as the American planes couldn't accomodate that size of bomb.
reply

America did this with more than just nuclear weapons, basically they are
lying cheating scumbags who can't be trusted and our special relationship is a joke.

reply

With talent like Stephen Hawking, it was just a matter of time and they managed to do it before Hawking came around. Physics is physics, nobody owns it.

IKEA Reference is gold right there.
The small bit of two pictures right after one of the American scientists got blinded in the beginning.

The U. S once asked the U. K to test its nuclear defences and we managed to fly into the U. S undetected and pretend nuke Washington and new york.
