I know Im late to comment, but one often overlooked factor is that the naming of the newly formed Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was also a propaganda move made to appease the Sicilian part of the kingdom who wasnt ever that happy of being jointly governed from Naples. Despite the two kingdoms being often governed together throughout history, the island of Sicily always maintained a certain desire of independence.
When merging the two kingdoms king Ferdinand went even to the extra mile of starting over the regnal numeration: he was Ferdinand the IV of Sicily (island) and III of Naples (the informal name for the continental Kingdom of Sicily, but became Ferdinand I of the two Sicilies.
While this might seem like a small thing, many times when this supposedly equal unions between kingdoms happened the monarchs kept the numeration of the stronger member in the union:
When in 1701 England and Scotland were fused into the United Kingdom, the newly formed nation kept the numeration of the English monarchy (this being interpreted as a subtle sign that it was an English expansion over Scotland.
Alfonso XII and his son Alfonso XIII of Spain choosing to deliberately follow the Casillian numeration over the Aragonese one signified the preference for the Castilian language over the many local ones in Spain (Aragonese, Catalan etc.
When of Italy was unified in 1861 the first Italian king Victor Emmanuel II decided to keep his number instead of starting over. This was done presumably so that he wouldnt be confused with his grandfather, but it was also interpreted as a sign that the recent unification of Italy was really a territorial expansion of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

Each area/race/people has a thing.
It seems Europe's thing is having very confusing naming for things.
The Holy See. Why is that the Vatican, and wth is a See as a noun - I thought that was a verb.
UK vs Britain.
Britony being in France
French Fries is Belgian.
Dutch refers to Netherlands, but Germans refer to their languages and land as Doitch(land.
The Holy Roman Empire is not Holy or Roman or an Empire.
The Federal Reserve is not Federal nor does it have any reserves.
And So. Many. English. Names. For. Things.
Received pronunciation? received? from who?
pronunciation, not pronoUnciation. why?

I always assumed this kingdom was ruled from Sicily and that they considered Naples to be a second Sicily for some strange reason, hence the name. The real story is even weirder, and reminds me of CK2 when a kingdom loses all of its de jure territory but keeps its name since there's still a ruler holding that title and so it stays as the name of their realm. Never thought this sort of thing happened in real history too.

I'm Sicilian and agree that the name didn't make sense. Also the capital was moved from Palermo to Naples. Oh and thank you for making this video, no one ever talks about my homeland before it was invaded by the Savoy kingdom. I hope you delve more into how the country ceased to exit

When the Normans under house de Hauteville conquered parts of southern Italy and later all of modern day Naples and Sicily, it was all simply part of the Kingdom of Sicily. The idea of Naples being anything but a city did not exist until the French showed up.

Detail about the Bordeaux duel between Peter and Charles, it did take place, but Charles purposefully avoided to be there until Peter left. Each one declared themselves the winner in absence of the other.

The kingdom of the 2 Sicily was actually richer than the northern italy and when they conquered southern italy they brought all the wealth to northern italy and it's still like this today

If the People's Republic of China (Chin-kuo or The Middle Kingdom) takes over Republic of China (Taiwan) would the country be renamed the People's Republic of Two Middle Kingdoms?
reply

Honestly, I like the name Kingdom of the two Sicilies, even if it is wrong. And at least it's not as big a lie as Independent State of Croatia or Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea
reply

first of all you never mentioned Naples which had most of this territory for a long time, second, whats wrong with the Kingdom of Two Sicilies? I like the name, its iconic
reply

Small correction: The Crown of Aragon was a heterogeneous monarchy formed Catalans and Aragonese. Aragonese didn't keep Sicily when the kingdom was broken up. Catalans did.

Italy really united too late to be a real power.
In eu4, I formed Italy before 1600, and boy is that a powerful nation so early.

reply

So, it was not a lie. There were two sicilies, but by name of two separated kingdons called sicilies, not by region name.
