Why did Italy switch sides in WW2? Italy did not switch sides. Not in WW1, nor in WW2.
THis is just British propaganda.
The alliance with Germany was signed by a Fascist Government, who took power by force with a coup. THat fascist government fought with Germany up to the very end, even killing other italians in the process, because yes, after its surrender Civil War broke out in Italy.
THe other half of the country was mainly fighting against the Fascists in the north, and the german occupiers. It was a portion of the country under American control that was not in the position to wage war against anyone. Infact, Italian partizans fought against the Nazis, not the regular troops who at that point were disbanded.
This meme about Italy betraying has to end. Its been 80 years of disgusting anti Italian propaganda.\r\n

In other words, the state has split in two as it always has been. even during fascism Italy was a monarchy and had its king Vittorio Emanuele 3 who had given the power to Mussolini to be the head of the government making Italy a dictatorial state. when Mussolini was dismissed by the king he went north and founded the Italian social republic with the help of the Germans. to the south, however, the monarchy surrendered, giving the blame for what happened to Mussolini in practice. the Italians did not forget the bad behavior of the Savoy (the kings of Italy) and when they had to choose from monarchy or republic they decided the second forcing the Savoy, those who had unified Italy, into exile.

If you don't have the ancient Roman spirit & discipline, don't even bother trying to bring back The Roman Empire. It's these aspects that made The Roman Empire so large.
Unfortunately, most Italians' Roman DNA has been polluted by the German invaders-making them less Roman in spirit and hence more weak in body-also less loyal to Rome. This shouldn't have happened, but it did.
Anyway, I think we have had enough of our empire now. It caused the Romans so much needless death and its own bad karma, which ultimately led to its fall.
Italy is already great because of our history. We don't need to repeat it to make Italy great again.

you didn't mention the atrocities in Abyssinia and greece and albania. Bully boys - marched into egypt with a 6 to 1 superiority in manpower. Marched into Kenya which has no standing army. Bully boys has the strongest navy in the med by far but too chicken to get out of port. Suez army sent tenth italian running back then called on fellow fascist to help. after a bit of to and froing they finally got stuffed in tunisis. -we didn't want the war- yeah right - when it was initially going well you cheered then all went tits up and you changed side. Italy was an itch that had to be scratched to secure the southern flank when invading europe.

The best army divisions that Italy had in ww2 was the 185th paratroopers division which was Italian paratroopers and the Italian elite troops and the corpo spedzione itliane those where the best divisions that Italy had in ww2 and even after when the Italian government surrender not all Italian soldiers and divisions didn-t surrender in northern Italy was still fighting on the axis side and northern italy was called the Italian social republic which was a fascist government and fascist Italian soldiers fought with the Germans units 1945 when the war was over so you had allied Italians against axis Italians in the war

Italy was a very young country, little more than half a century old in 1930. If you study the wars between the Duchys you will see a tradition of changing sides. It is culturally acceptable. This is elegantly explained by looking at Italy's most famous horse race, the Palio. Here jockeys and districts of Sienna betray eachother and bribes are integral to the race. The genocide of the Abyssinians was more the kind of war the Italians liked, firebombing villages and then killing the fleeing civilians with mustard gas. This with just a few hundred Italian casualties.

They technically didn't switch sides. There's a lot more to it. The allies invaded Italy. Germany was trying to help in the Italian lands and Mussolini was out of the picture in handcuffs etc. The allies put in a Vassal Italian leader that obeyed the allies and forced the Italian people to surrender and follow allied rules. The Italian soldiers were forced to turn on eachother and a lot of the fascist Italian soldiers were confused about what was going on. Germany was afraid at this point with losing their ally but kept up thr fight all alone.

Very Inaccurate!
Italy didnt switch side! it was a coupe detate where IL Duce was taken his power.
after a week in a hotel -not a prison- i was saved by the German under the Command of Skorzeny.
the Italian Fascist kept fighting until the very end of the war togheter with the Germans comrades.
there was also frequent spionage and attack behind enemy lines by both Germans and Italian, even in the famous battle of Monte Cassino Italian Fascist fought against the Itailan traitors!
so NO they didnt switch side.

reply

why are you still talking about switching sides? On 8 September 1943, General Badoglio announced the armistice of Italy against the allies. Italy surrendered and no longer participated in the conflict, it did not fight with the allies, except to defend itself from the German occupation and reprisals. The Germans did not want to see Italy and immediately occupied it.

ITALY is a shit country. Everyone is rude, everyone is unhappy, pizzas in England are better, Coffee in Melbourne is better. Venice is overrated; its a maze full of shops that cater to tourist that sell the same things with the same design. Basically a floating maze filled with ugly rude people with unpleasant accents and overrated food

My father fought in the last months of war, against the english, americans. He told me that there were no weapons a full air superiotity of the allies. His unit surrendered just close to Milan. He was 20 years old and with many others decided to proceed the war on the side of the germans. Traitor? I don't think so.
reply

There were 2 Italy: RSI Italy remained with the axis, the king and the kingdom chose the allies. However we lost the war, we hanged the Duce and exiled the king up to the 3rd generation. Then we became a democracy and a liberal republic: what else do you want from us?
reply

nobody switched sides. mussolini lost government because he was under the king. the king arrested him. Italy signed a peace agreement with the allies, thus becoming neutral. The Germans occupied it instead of leaving the territory.
reply

FUN FACT: In northern Italy the Italians fought the Anglo-Americans until 1945. ITALIAN TRAITORS! -
Today: Liz Truss texting Blinken a minute after the north stream pipeline was blown -It is done-. British?

This is one of the only vids I've found of how Italy was slowly defeated by the allies.
If anyone know of a more in depth vids of all the battles and whatnot plz LMK I'd greatly appreciate it!

reply

I knew nothing about this; however, reading the comments it seems that there was no switching, but more some part of Italy supported the Axis and the other supported the Allies.
reply

It's also good too remember the brazilian soldiers that were so important on freeing the italians from the fascism, they fought in many battles specially Montese and Monte Castello.
reply

Everyone: -Ridicules Italy for changing sides.
Me: The Italians who joined the Allies were democrats, as the bald Italian guy desperately needed the moustache man's hair -

reply

Why switch sides?
They were getting their asses handed to them by the Allies, the Germans were fading in the third quarter, which made an opportune time to jump ship. Capish.

reply

Breaking news: they didn-t switch sides. They fell into a civil war, the Fascist collaboration puppet led by Benito of the RSI. And the allied Italian Socialist CLN

reply

Biased video. Italy did not switch sides. There was a civil war. Shame on all of the childish ignorants in the web.
reply

Simple. They switched sides because they wanted to win with the Allies the war which they had lost with the Germans.
reply

So Italy never changed side in WW2. It was attacked by the Germans, their former allies, after an armistice.
reply

The same reason they switched sides in WW1. went over to the side they saw who was going to win. BOTH WARS
