Operation Tidal Wave - America-s disastrous assault on Romania
video description
-Romanians do their best to make us as happy and comfortable as possible. We no longer call our camp a prison because it is not run like a prison. The food has been good since the beginning and is becoming more Americanized by the day. They have broad views and try everything we suggest- (Lieutenant W. A. Kine); -
-I am in excellent condition and perfectly healthy. We are treated really well, more like guests, not like prisoners. Were just locked in- (Lt. James W. Stone); -
-We are well treated and it is like a vacation for our crazy crew- (Lieutenant John A. Leins); -
-The Romanians are exceptionally polite to us and treat us better than their soldiers- (Lieutenant Frederich C. Mee);
-I fell in love with Romania. It is a very beautiful country, with almost everything you want, from forests to rivers- (Lieutenant Ros N. Buzzard); -
-I am in a prison camp in Romania and they treat us excellently. I do not say this because they tell us so, but because it is a camp like you have never read in any book or newspaper- (Lieutenant Harold W. Brazier); -
-Every Sunday we have a religious service, which I am grateful for- (Thomas Fallon);
-What amazes me more is that even though we are legally at war with this people, they still dont care, or so it seems. Even the gendarme who arrested me arrived with an air of business, greeted me and called me comrade, shook my hand in a very friendly way and said he was sorry he had to search me for the gun- (Lieutenant Jackson F. Dunn); -
-We were treated as honored guests by the Romanians who caught us and even after we were handed over to the Romanian military authorities, we were treated with camaraderie and goodwill- (Lieutenant Jimmy P. Robinsson); -
-All our days pass in the same way. Breakfast at 8, lunch at 12 and dinner at 6. We can walk around the garden from 10 - 12 and from 4 - 6 p. m. The food is good. We also have a small canteen that prepares cakes, candies, etc. - (Louis Falvo);
-Romanians, to my great surprise, do not love war. They treat us well, they give us 3 good meals a day and clean housing- (Sergeant Bernard Artz); -
-Our treatment is very good. In fact, I am still puzzled by the way we are being treated- (Lieutenant Frederick L. Modorin); -
-The Romanians treat us very well and I cant understand why we bomb their towns- (sergeant John v. Szezun); -
-We are detained by the Romanian government, which complies with the Geneva international rules for the detention of prisoners of war. It provides us with medical care and other things for our good living- (Lieutenant Roscoe H. Wilkes);
-I am in a Romanian hospital; they have the best European medical equipment here and the world treats us exactly as if we were their own. You can be sure that no one is twisting my hand for saying this. We eat the same food that soldiers and civilians eat. You must know that we are prisoners of the Romanians, not of the Germans. This is a great advantage in my favor- (James E. Mann);\r\n

oh wow, i am Romanian and i never knew how this actually happened. There are still to this day stories of peasants from that area speaking about the American airmen found in the fields after the battle and how they gave chocolate and cigarettes to the people, but i didnt know how important this place was for the axis and how big this fight was. And can i say, as a Romanian, i was pleasantly surprised to hear the name of most cities read correctly, which is something rare for English speakers. Anyway, how you described the battle and the preparations was so captivating, powerful and sad. I hope such things will never happen again, although it seems as if history repeats itself these days. And one more thing - i live in Bucharest in the north area of the city, and every single day on my walk to the park, i pass by a small monument that celebrates all the American lives that were ended in WWII on Romanian land and i feel as though today i learned more about these men. On my next walk tomorrow, i will try to see if some of the names you mentioned that received medal of honor can be found on this monument.

Romania-s riches, its crucial geographical position have been a blessing and a curse for the country and the Romanian people down the ages, even before the three Romanian countries finally succeeded to become united into one state. Romania DID NOT WANT to enter WW2 but was FORCED to do so after having lost large parts of its territory to Nazi Hungary through the Second Vienna Award, but also to the USSR and Bulgaria which took advantage of its predicament. Nazi Germany NEEDED BADLY Romania-s oil and did everything to force Romania into providing it, promising to enable it to recover its lost territories. This is how the Romanian oil ended in the hands of Nazi Germany. The reasons, the international political situation, the geographical configuration played a crucial role and Romania, surrounded by Nazi Germany-s ally Hungary, by the USSR and Bulgaria, HAD NO CHOICE but to enter the war on the side of the Axis.

The IAR80 and 81C variants respectively were little known romanian made all metal single pilot fighters that proved effective despite the impossibility of further development past 1940, used all the way till 1945 with its last combat mission being on the 8th of May 1945. These fighters surprised american P38s and B series bombers, althought obsolete against fighters by 1943, those things could still hunt. In 1940 it was on par with early British, American and German fighters, proving that the design itself was only let down by Romania-s industrial complex, needing foreign engines.

It was a huge fail, their bombers were decimated. look at the numbers provided by themselves. Probably the biggest failure in bombing during ww2. Why you don't talk about those bombers that lost the directions and dropped their bombs over civilians. purposely! We got them big. The productions were back in a mether of weeks, at full. Even Campina was back in a month. History is always written by the winners. That raid was the biggets failure of ww2, yet they release their bombs, in order to fly back to shelter, over civilians. You were like fishes in a shallow water LOL

My grandparents house was about 500m from the Columbia Aquila rafinery and i spent alot of my childhood playing on the ground of it's ruins, i never knew until much later why it was in such a bad state. When i was abit older my parents told me that one of the American bombs was actually dropped in our garden since we were so close to the actual bombing site. Great documentary thank you for this knowledge.

I heard stories about it and some bunkers are still present to this day. I found one in a deep ravine in the mountains north of Ploiesti. It blew my mind that they built in such remote locations. Anyway, during these raids, some american airman survived crashing only to be killed by scared peasants with pitchforks. The people telling the story were bitter about it.

That Colonel Smart maybe wasn't that smart after all?
When were the allies able to decifer the german Enigma maschines?
Maybe if they could at the time of the raid, they could have learned of the german heavy defence measures of the oilfields?

As a Romanian I feel ashamed that we allowed our oil to be used by low scumbags Nazis and their war. We should have disabled those oil fields ourselves and save our oil for much better uses. Never give in to monsters and their ideologies.

For anyone wondering, Romania was first on Germany's side and then on Allies' side because of Transylvania. We were following our interest of reuniting all the Romanian territories
