What was the Role of Austria as part of Germany in WW2?

What was the Role of Austria as part of Germany in WW2? I think part of the confusion of what is German is the idea of German identity. Remember at first the whole region consisted of tribes of people. Then some tribes became powerful. These tribes spread out. Win then lose land. People traced their identity to their roots more than where they were born. Back and forth. The idea of national identity is a modern construct. Look at Italy. Or India. Both of these countries consist of distinct identities such as Sicilians versus northern Italians. Punjabi vs other Indians. More closer to home example probably would be Quebec joining The country of France. They both speak French. Quebec citizens trace their roots to France. Would they want to rejoin France? Some wouldn-t mind some do. History tends to simplify things and whenever you have a large group of people there usually isn-t just one viewpoint. Sure there were German sympathizers and others who were against it. But in a bigger scope what if Austria voted against becoming Annexed? It was doubtful that Austria would have remained neutral. It did not have the advantages of Switzerlands terrain to resist any invasion.\r\n

my Grandfather from Tirol was sent to the Caucasian Mountain Region.
one Day the Colonel asked for a volunteer to bring two horses to a Vet quiet some distance away.
no one was keen about that, but my Grandfather was the only one volunteered for the 3 Day trip.
when he returned, the whole Regiment was already sent to Stalingrad.
the love for horses did save his life.
none returned back home, except for him, he was the only one alive from the Regiment at the end of the war.

After the annexation of Austria to Germany, some people called it - the rape of Austria -, both countries got what they secretly wished for. With regards to a great part of Austrian citizens, you have never seen a happier or a more cheerful - rape - victim. In reference to global decency, I hope you never will either. But, fear not, the Nazis and their ideas are still alive and well in Austria. Thinly disguised they reach into the highest echelons of Austrian society - yes, to this very day!

Unfortunately, it looks like the Austrians were statistically more guilty of the crimes of Nazi Germany than the regular Germans. According to _The Politics of the Nazi Past in Germany and Austria_ by David Art, Austrians were only 8% of the Third Reich population but 13% of the SS, 40% of the death camps staff and 75% of their commanders. It's ironic that Austria managed to somewhat dodge most of the bad reputation that felt on Germany's shoulders.

The republic of German-Austria (1918-19) was not allowed to unificate with the rest of Germany by the Allies. Selfdetermination was for everybody except for the Germans. So after unification 1938 the last Austrian chancellor Seyss-Inquart became the head of the 'Reichskommissariat' with 3 other Austrian commissars(out of 4) to rule the occupied Netherlands 1940-45, guess to do what.

The only Reason for an unifcation with Germany would be that we could take from this Potatomunchkin Nation again there Football Trophy. (Remeber Germany: German football champion Season 1940/41 SK Rapid Wien Yes we took your Championship Tropy to Vienna) -------- No other Reason I can think of.

Very emotive and not historically accurate in many ways! It is a shame as this program started off being reasonably accurate! Why wouldn't the German speaking peoples of Europe unite? The Irish, Scots and Welsh ended up havingthe English lanuage shoved down their throats!

The more I think of it the more I don't even understand why Austria exists as a separate country at all? In my eyes they are just one of the many German states like Bavaria. It should've become a permanent part of Germany at some point.

-The Austrians were - after the Annexion - just a small part of the overall german population but they were - looking at % - highly overrepresented in the higher ranks of the Regime- (source: Christopher Clark)

Austrians 1938: We want to be part of Germany as we are germans.
Austrians 1946: We aren-t germans we-re austrians, germans occupied us, we are their first victim not perpetrator.
