The moors, they had maps of the whole world. The Spanish conquered the moors after they’ve been there in Spain from. 711 to 1492. That’s no coincidence that Columbus travels to the americas the same year. The moors conquered Spain and then Spain regained its power and got ahold of the treasures that came from the moors. Most of the oldest cathedrals in Spain were moorish temples that they built and left behind and once they were defeated the Spanish turned them into cathedrals.

I was told that Columbus didn’t underestimate the size of the planet more so he dramatically overestimated the size of Indonesia and Japan. He knew how far it was to China. He just thought that there were a bunch of really big islands to the east of China.

Eratosthenes did not prove that the Earth was a globe. It was already known by his time. What he proved was the size of the Earth and came pretty close to the actual answer.
