Every time someone makes a video on Illinois it actually just turns out to be a video about Chicago. We're so tired of hearing about Chicago. The city has a stranglehold on our state and they couldn't care less about anything south of them. It's fitting that you didn't even once bring up our capital, Springfield, because Chicago also forgets Springfield exists. Our horrid governor rarely goes anywhere but Chicago. The incompetence of their mayor nearly matches that of the LA mayor. Combined they ensure that Chicago remains one of the most crime infested cities in the country. If it weren't for that one city Illinois wouldn't even be a deep blue state.

Overall solid, especially in the pre-statehood era stuff (personally would have mentioned Cahokia's population at 1000AD being larger than London or Paris to really drive home how massive a metropolis it was. Shawneetown being the only city in the US founded by a federal charter besides DC definitely should have had a few seconds of recognition. Cairo's role as a Civil War hub (and at least a brief mention of Springfield, if for nothing else than a Lincoln tie-in) definitely would have been good too.

I've lived in Illinois since I was a little kid. I've visited the Cahokia Mounds and Lincoln's Tomb; and have been to Alton on numerous occasions. It may not be my birth state, but Illinois is my home state; and despite the hard times this state has gone through (especially under our current governor, I'm proud to call myself an Illinoisan.

My family were early settlers in Indian Creek. The Indian Creek massacre was one of the precursors to The Blackhawk War. Some natives were not removed in the treaty of the time. Chief Shabbona held land for decades after the war. Just some added content from a Rock River resident.

Yeah, just popped in to say, As someone who lives here, this place sucks.
Also, might've noted the not insignificant number Southern Illinois volunteers that fought for the Confederacy. The volunteers from Marion county alone forming it's own company in the Army of Tennessee.

If I was a betting man I would say that the decline of the Mississippian civilization in the 1500s would probably be the arrival of disease from the Spanish. If there was trade in region I would bet that disease could travel faster than European explorers.

6: 30 Maybe for the modern cities that weren’t founded at the time but you are still showing, you could use a grey or dark icon to show they weren’t there yet. Just an idea I thought would save you some time. Great video.

Of course, Chicago has an overarching influence, but it still could have been a bit more diverse. The native Americans at Starved Rock. How and why did Springfield became the state capitol Stuff like that.

I grew up in suburban Chicago. Thank you for this video. I was a bit surprised you let out the Great Chicago Fire, but other than that, there were things that I did not know before watching. Brilliant!

You learn very little about the history of Illinois from watching this video. Over half is about Indians in the area and the rest is about how different world events affected Chicago. Pretty disappointing.

You can’t please everyone. This is pop history.
Chicago is mentioned a lot because it is important to US History. Plus most people outside of Illinois and the US only know about Chicago.

Illinois is in a 3 way tie with New York and California as the most backward, corrupt, over taxed, mismanaged state in The Union. It's a financial disaster.

Illinois played such a crucial role in shaping the U. S, but I feel like its history is often overlooked. Do you think it gets the recognition it deserves

Another proud Chicagoan here! This city is still thriving, evolving, building, and still has a very diverse economy. As an old Chicago saying Chicago works

12: 52 Kentucky and Missouri were Neutral yet still slaveholding states. They do not deserve to look as if they were Union.
