Too Many Choices? God Dammit

Do you feel overwhelmed and disappointed with a purchase when there are just too many options? You may have occurred the overchoice effect. According to the psychologist Barry Schwartz, the reason for this is that you are trying to pick the best option, or even after making the purchase you believe you could have chosen something better. Interestingly though, neither children nor elders experience the overchoice effect. Children tend to go with their favourite, while elders simply pick what is good enough. So next time that overcoice effect hits, go with your gut instinct like a child; or remind yourself that you dont need to pick the best one- just one that is good enough- like an elder. Article

This may very well be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. To many choices? Really? So, everyone should be the same? Like the same things? Have the same pallet? Seriously? What's wrong with people? Of course grown adults are going to be dissatisfied with their choice. It's the same thing as the grass is always greener on the other side. Children don't know about the green grass and the elderly don't give a crap anymore. The single most important thing a company/restaurant/business can do is offer choices. Does everyone need the same life insurance policy? The problem with people not being satisfied with their decisions is not a choice problem. That's ludicrous. Does everyone want to drive the same car? Notice how the video takes time to try to make capitalism look bad. Capitalism is the most important economic and political system created in the history of the world. Capitalism has brought more people out of poverty than all other systems combined. Don't be fooled. Even socialist/communist systems in the world that have succeeded use capitalism to do so. Governments use socialism and communism to suppress their people while using capitalism to make their money. Anyone that thinks there has been a better system doesn't understand economics. One day there might be a better system, but history hasn't come up with it yet. This was the worst Psych2Go video yet.

The over Choice effect. Before you look for a new phone you decide on the highest price you're willing to pay. Then you move on to the make like for instance Sony or Motorola whichever is the favorite then do you really like a large-screen or is your thing more complexity? Take into account every one of your preferences like for instance if you prefer an iPhone then start with the price, check out your options, don't forget to take as much time thinking about it as possible or you could do my way, think about it over several weeks and decide on one of them at the last possible moment. That last advice may not work for some people!

I experienced doing this most of the time when I have lots of options in front of me, especially on clothes. But I tend to overcome it with the money I exactly had at the moment and choose which one is comfortable and fits me well. There are times I keep my wishlist online full but unable to decide which one to buy; however, because of limited financial resources, I tend to choose which ones I need first and then followed by the rest of the list later on. If you take a thought about it, like which ones do you need and want, you could generally opt out which item you should take. Well, good luck!

It's okay if I have to choose something only for today (what to eat, something cheap or something that doesn't have bad consequences if chosen wrong (what shampoo to buy. But with expensive decisions (which shoes to buy) or decisions that affect a long time of my life (which career to choose) the fear of choosing wrong is the worst, and that's why I delay those decisions.
Having lots of options for LITTLE things (that you can repeatedly get many times in your life) is almost fun. But with BIG and rarer things having a lot of options makes choosing nearly impossible. :(

When buying something variety is great so you aren't forced to buy something that doesn't work for you. You just have to know exactly what you need/want before you go to buy it. Less choices isn't actually a good thing, but I can understand the over choice effect on people who are given many choices on things they didn't even know they were going to have to choose in the first place. Preparation is key. Not knowing what you want/need or how the thing you're getting works or is important for you will ultimately be what gives you the over choice effect.

I suffer from the Overchoice effect, but in a different way. For me, there's the problem that there are WAY too many things that I'm genuinely interested in and I can't decide which field to pick for me and I don't want to decide too fast because this might end up with me not having chosen the right thing. I don't think there's actually a way to overcome that though since my future profession, what I dedicate my life to is insanely important and I don't think too many people instantly know what to choose there.

Oh, thought this was going to about being given multiple options about a situation and being asked to decide what to do.
Personally, I can't handle plans already being made to go someplace and then other options being presented to me instead. It's like, Go with what we talked about. Don't ask me to make a change or decision on the spot. And I seriously get stressed out if someone gives me more than three options to think decide over.

Isn't this also related with the terror people have of failure nowadays? You try so hard to pick the best option, considering all your possibilities and getting anxious because you want to get the best product, not the worst, but it backfires. I see this same thing happen but in education and student grades.
Maybe it's a problem society now has in general, less about many choices and more about not-failing ever attitude.

My way to take decisions:
take out the options that cant be taken (things that you dont want because a reason)
if there is an option better take it if not list the pros and cons of each one
look for the ones with most pros o the pros you like most
choose one if there is a better one for you or choose random if they are all good for some reason or another

It's because little kids don't overthink their actions the way older people do and neither do elders put that much effort into every choice when you reach that point. When you're in between everything and every choice seems like it matters so much. But to kids and elders it's less important, and so they live happier.

As a music teacher, I stress a lot about the best way to teach. what's the most effective? What's a waste of time? What matches the student's learning style? There's so many options, and while there are a number of accepted methods, it's just so hard to find something you're truly happy with.

I perfer having more choices so that I can narrow it down, but usually I already know what I want so I've never gotten stressed out about it. I'm usually stressed or disappointed when there aren't enough choices. For some reason that makes me feel instantly trapped psychologically

An solution that always works: be vegan XD
Is there wool, fur, milk, eggs, honey etc. in there? No? How about any chemicals or substitutes derived from any animal parts? Palm oil? How's the price?
Aaaand you've about two to three options left.
Worls everytime: P

Well, now I know why I don't buy a lot of Steam games. I could never figure out why having too much choice increases the odds of me not making a purchase, and why I prefer to browse digital storefronts on consoles in spite of them offering fewer choices.

Hello. Im Eve and I often have trouble asking people for things. Whether it be in intimate situations or simply asking if they could get me chips from the pantry. This affects my life greatly, do you think you could make a video about this?

I have a question. If you're still in high school, and you're really good at and interested in lots of different things, how to choose what college to go to and what to do for living, and don't get disappointed afterwards?

I always felt that that this is why people going to a new restaurant always seem overwhelmed by the menu. Most people don't have an elimination process, instead they literally consider each option with equal value.
reply

I overcome the overchoice effect by determining what exactly I want to acheive and limiting my decision time knowing that any decision is better than no decision and that I can always corect my decision later.
reply

I think it's the best when you have a general recommendation for when you don't want to go through all the work of choosing, but still as many choices as possible for those who do want to optimize.

Guys I have a GOAL of helping people destroy their anxiety, gain more confidence, and be happy with their lives. I make videos pertaining to all that. Check them out if you are interested! :)

When it comes to clothes, I actually miss uniforms because you could wear the same clothing color scheme every day. I don't like raiding my closet trying to find something to wear for school

I once spent half an hour trying to choose a new shampoo and ended up buying nothing because I was overwhelmed with too many brands and types and smells and I just couldn't decide.

At any dine-in restaurant I pick a category of food based on what I'm craving but then often just get what I know I already like (some restaurant menus are the size of story books)

Sounds like an easy fix. Reload your save to the point where you understand the outcome of every choice.
