I had tried out for my school's varsity swim team this year and made it. I thought that I was really slow and asked the coach how I made varsity and not JV. He said that it was because I was really fast at all of my strokes especially my butterfly stroke. I thought he had made a mistake and that he had put my times for each stroke in wrong. He did, he had subtracted 10 seconds from my butterfly stroke. So instead of 49 seconds, he put in 39 seconds. I think I need to be on the JV team and now I feel anxious about going to varsity swim practice because I feel like a hindrance to the team because i'm too slow to be of any use to the team. I mean i'm getting faster, but I still feel like I need to be on the JV team.

i wore a mask in front of my dad because he always wanted me to be better then my siblings and compared us to each other and i guess that mask has kind of been moulded into me. and i guess i kind of feel like this but about my mental illness, my feelings
(like if i get a crush on someone i start to doubt if they even like me back and question every one of their actions, then lie to them and say i don't like them anymore and i push them away only to realize that i never stopped having romantic feelings for them but i feel its too late)
and I've recently come out to my friends and i feel like an imposter.

I don't think I have this because I don't fake modesty and try to gain approval by faking compliments. If I'm not fine I'll often tell people. I think I just have low self-esteem and especially low feelings of self worth. When other people compliment my intelligence or looks or personality I really don't get it. I feel like they must be seeing me through a rose-coloured filter and I know all my flaws so I really can't take the compliment very seriously, or if I don't trust them then then I worry that they're being insincere, especially if they have said bad things about me in the past.

Dam, i've just realised what this feeling inside of me is. When i entered secondary, i was percieved as clever, and simply went along with it because i enjoyed it. then a year passsed by and i realised that i wasn't doing good enough, and i felt sad, really sad. So, i did what i had to do, i sat down for the entirety of winter to study for exams, and just kept on doing so, all in order to beat the best person in that specific exam. I never did, and along the months, i came close, but never did.

Ive been researching about this syndrome and I match the signs but I still genuinely believe Im dumb and talentless because of my decreased academic performance. I dont think Im intelligent at all but why does it seem like I have the imposter syndrome. if Im not intelligent? I dont get it. Other people in the comments seems to be feeling relieved like oh okay so Im actually more than what I take credit for. cool but I? dont? feel? relieved?

Auricular acupuncture is what helped me, not just with this but so much more, but I do believe the person providing the treatment is the key to success. I've been seeing her once a week for almost a year now and it's like I've become part of the family. I also call her My YODA because she was able to do what 16 years of psychologists, psychiatrists, hypnotherapists, treatment centers, therapy and a crap load of medication couldn't do.

I think that's me. I constantly read people's body language and try as hard as I can to be what people think or want me to be. I never tell people What I think or ever feel, thinking that they don't want to know about it and don't care about me. I'm always trying to down play my achievements so they won't think I'm full of myself. I work as hard as I can and always think that they only congratulate me out of pity.

I feel like people can have the imposter effect with their friends, right? I always get this feeling that I'm a toxic friend, diagnosing myself with this fact and labeling myself as a 'toxic person' when it's not actually true. I'm scared of being found out that I'm not actually a good friend or something, and I can tell this seems to affect my self-esteem sometimes. Anyone else relate?

I think many times people feel like they have not earned their accomplishments because they see other people who look like they work just as hard or harder but never recieve half the achievements as they have. what people need to realize is that we are all responsible for our own life and results and we shouldn't feel guilty for our own success that we worked hard for.

Is it normal to feel this with relationships? For the first time ever, i met a girl that I really like and she really likes me back, but i haven't told any of my friends because i feel like they wouldn't believe me or rather I don't even really believe myself. I feel like a faker that's not actually inlove, even though I do have a crush on that girl: (

I've heard Impostor Syndrome called reverse Dunning Kruger effect. The term seems to arise because it's a very similar distortion of your confidence, except from the expert's point of view.
This just seems to be how our brains are wired so avoiding it will probably always take some effort.

I'm not 100% sure yet I think that this is one of many symptoms of long-standing depression, where it just boils down to refusing to validate oneself - or worse, invalidating oneself, even though in reality, you've done very well and/or did nothing that's considered criminal or evil.

Until I see the mark scheme then I know I deserved it. I dont think I gave the syndrome but I can relate to the modesty Id the best policy. Its too much pressure in black communities when youre smart. Im average but other days I get As but mostly Cs sadly sometimes Ds and Es.

Istg every point was like a straight jab at me and I feel so taken aback and also at the same time lowkey reassured that I'm not the only one who feels this way? I just thought there was something wrong with me and that thought was slowly killing me from the inside.

I feel like everyone should try to be real and less fake, not saying that I am good at it at all but I just feel like the whole imposter effect stems from the fact that we wanna be more than who we are i. e. we are just not staying real.

And then there is me, who accepted that she is a fraud and rejected living up to what people expect her to be and thus, good grades don't matter anymore.
I am my own Queen. I know.

But what about help in men? The study was originally done on women but for men they don't really know how they would actually figure it out because men hide their feelings more.

Imposter syndrome sounds weird? I dont relate at all except thinking that youre dumb. Be confident and if you get a grade, dont show it off unless someone asks.

Used to be open.
It was all too fast
And all too stressful
Now I have to make a new mask
Just give me energy to reach my bed now

If you know that you suffer from imposter syndrome, doesn't that mean you know you're not an imposter? Yet that doesn't seem to help.
