The relationship between a child and their parents does a lot to shape a childs life, even after they enter adulthood. In some cases, these relationships are loving and nurturing, and the child grows up to be a confident, secure, and empowered adult. However, in other cases, these relationships are toxic and can have a negative effect on the child. Watch this video to see how many of these signs do you relate to. If you relate to this video and want to know how toxic childhood can impact your adulthood, feel free to check out this video we've made previously

I didn't think I really experience things like this as a kid, but now that I'm older and understand what a lot of these toxic things are I feel like I just brushed it aside. Everything they said in the video is something I relate to, especially now that I'm growing older and seeing everything in an entirely different perspective. I feel like I'm always seeking out other people to make happy, when I'm not even happy myself. Just to have the feeling that Oh I just made someone's day a bit better even though I'm still feeling pretty shitty. Oh well, time to put that smile back on and find someone else in need of a little mood booster. I put everyone's needs and mental health above my own and it's starting to show now that I've pulled four consecutive all nights just trying to be a therapist for my friends going through stressful and horrible things on Discord. At this point it's become an addiction to make people happy and make sure they're having a better day than they were before I talk to them and this definitely stems from me not wanting people to feel sad or lonely like I felt my entire life.

My earliest memories are my dad not being around and drinking. Then we moved and my parents divorced in a serious situation It honestly gave me PTSD bc I was there watching the whole thing yk my parents physically fighting and screaming at each other then the police came and yeah I started becoming kinda a bully bc I violence was all I knew obviously kids fought back and started bullying me back so everyone hated me at school and at home my mom was struggling and since my brother was older he understood and developed mental things and started bullying me at home Luckily everything is okay now I try to forget it and have amazing friends and my family is a pretty much healed I have a amazing relationship with my mother and I am very lucky to have such a amazing family now

Just tell me, after I losing my mother whom I loved very much. But my father always fight with her infront of me and my big brother. 6 past years, my father got cancer and I'm doing as much household with my studies but he's like you are not enough as if even I got 92 percent in my 10th class but it's low for him. My big brother also stop supporting me and they both don't even listen to my opinions or feelings. My father always try to control my life in every possible way. I just want if I could live with my mother alone. My situation is getting worse by everyday and I just want to leave them anyway. What am I supposed to do?

My mom doesnt give me any affection at all. She never talks to me and yells at me when i try to have a conversation with her or just ignores me. We always get into arguments and blames me when she gets into fights with her boyfriend. She hasn't hugged me and said she loves me in nearly 4 years. Im 13 btw. She is always so nice to my brother and shows that she loves him. Sometimes i hear her talking about me in a bad way to my brother. I hate living in my house: / idk if this is toxic or not but if it is pls let me know

Living in fear was my childhood all the way through my college years and early years in my career. Also I didn't have much confidence in myself. I'm working through trying to feel more confident with self affirmations. I did too much self-criticism. I sometimes still find myself falling back on it.

Wow! I Have all the signs specially the No. 4 since I was a child I feel that if there's something wrong it's my fault already. All the bad things happening in the house is my fault. This is the reason why I don't want to have a family on my own. I feel it's not for me. Thanks for my parents.

I'm 16 and I bloody know that my parents don't love eachother.
I literally don't know how can I love my future family. The loveliest I can think of is not being around just so that if I ever got annoying my family wouldn't be disturbed.

I have PTSD because my brother tried to kill, and hurt me when I was younger. My parents arent very abusive, they just yell alot, but they are horrible parents because they taught my brother that it's ok to do that. And they want me to forgive him.
reply

Please it makes me so sad when people make fun of children in media or fictional characters that went through abuse in their childhood. Even if theyre fictional I still sympathize with them because they remind me of me and my parents.

Very indetical to mine early development, every part. when I think about it. If only I could have seen the issues in myself and my situation and not go default brain dead child and teen. Sucks to live like a backdoor doormat I guess.

I had all of those signs in childhood. I treated my classmates kindly, but eventually they started asking too much of me, wanting to copy my work or buy things for them. I started resenting them and walking on eggshells around them.

Everytime i try and bring up my traumatizing early childhood my mom always says it was the only way she could get me to behave but recently she's saying to my therapist is that nothing she does works, hmm i wonder why that is?
reply

I can relate to this. I deal with almost everything listed in here everyday. Idk what to do. I feel helpless rn. I wish i could be happy again. I wont say my age but im pretty young. Are children supposed to deal with this?
reply

Look I only have 6 of the 6 signs so it's not that bad.
Ok but on the real note im on the chapter of my life of trying to fix the issues from my childhood. Seems like every day is one step forward and two steps back.

I have one toxic parent and they manipulated me and I barely speak to him because of the yelling and verbal abuse, I cant handle when two people are yelling at each other now and I go on a complete lockdown mentally.
reply

Me: _anxious that my family is like this and denies it_
My brain: _Remember when your own mother forgot when you came out and then denied it even happening because of you being 'too yoing' to know? _

reply

I used wonder why, I have so many issues and emotions bottled up. I now realize my childhood had a big role in this and my father would say stop being a wussy and be a man if I ever told him how I feel.
reply

I feel better knowing that other people know exactly what I went through just by clicking on this video. I don't mean this in a bad way, I mean like it's more comforting knowing I'm not the only one.
reply

Preparing my best for exam so that I can get admission outside of my city for better learning and to get some space and will allow my growth regardless of other people's opinions and manipulation
reply

Yeah I relate to some signs, even if I deal with some of these things now it'll change nothing, so I'll just keep playing videogames until I can move out and reset my avatar irl lmao.
reply

I lived in constant fear as a kid. My step father was very unpredictable, violent, and explosive. I never knew when the slightest little thing would set him off. I'm an adult now.
reply

You said there is always someone who listens to you! But it's a lie no one will ever listen to me because nobody really cares, we have to deal with our life by ourselves
reply

i have a lot of these. My parents always used to fight, the most toxic ones are my dad and sister, but somehow i find ways to forgive them and blame it on myself
