Why New Orleans' Geography SUCKS This video made me unreasonably emotional. I dont live in Louisiana and have only ever been there to visit, plus I dont have any family there. But I live in Houston, and Ive been to Galveston so much over the years that its like a second home to me. Both Houston and Galveston have similar problems - Houston is built along the Buffalo Bayou and as seen with Hurricane Harvey, flooding is a big problem. Galveston is on a barrier island - an island that serves as the first defense for the mainland coastline during a hurricane, and its been pummeled by hurricane after hurricane - the worst of course being the Great Storm of 1900, but also Hurricanes Carla, Alicia, and Ike, just to name a few. So it makes me feel a bit of kinship with the people of New Orleans, who love their city and are probably just as scared of losing it as Im scared of losing Galveston.
Not to mention Im old enough to remember Hurricane Katrina - seeing the coverage on the news and seeing Houston inundated with refugees from New Orleans. It was pretty scary.

NPE I completely and quite diagree with your initila choice of L A New Orleans as the top factor for a superb city. Alll the info you proffer I woul also proffer for reasons NEVER to buld there. All the other choices are so much easier to ID: : SFOm, NYC, Dallas, Heck SEATTLE, even Pittsburg. TRhe only one rationaile I ever think of is location location location lets add one more great idea. location. so in to your video at 3: 10, notwithstanding you have given us 18: 17. clic.

The shoreline issue I don-t think is -rising- sea levels. But the diversion of the Mississippi River to keep it where it was and ultimately removing the deposition of sedament is more the issue. Climate change is a meh as the planets climate goes thru cycles. But removing the deposition of sedament haze caused the loss of flood plain to protect that city.
Now that-s a man made issue that is impacting that region. Without the new soil, the ocean will always win.

This video is full of incorrect statements about the founding of New Orleans, American Indians, climate change and hurricanes, and neglects the second and third most important reasons behind geography for the city-s problems which are: the democrat party, and the federal government, specifically the Corps of Engineers, the EPA, FEMA, with their conflicting regulations and damaging projects like the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet.

Thank you for bringing light to this catastrophic issue. Although there are so many climate change related issues, this is very dear to my heart as my dad was born and raised in New Orleans. New Orleans is certainly an interesting place to say the least; it has a very unique culture, climate, and overall way of life (i think) and to paraphrase my dad, -new orleans isn-t the south, it-s a whole different culture-

You should really also mention why New Orleans is so important to US economics like it's access to the major waterways and gulf of Mexico.
It's placement sucks but is absolutely vital to maintaining the American way of life.
I'm pointing this out because I remember Katrina and I remember all the idiots who were droning on and on about 'eh screw em! They're dummies who should know better and just move! '

reply

They could build a floodgate and canal towards that natural path of the river further south west. Then when there's danger of flooding, just divert part of the water that way away from the city, and in the meantime remove all the levees that are not not needed anymore, so that the silt can flow again to the delta and build up more land, protecting from hurricanes going forward rather than continuously shrinking.

Of course! It's horrible! Anybody think LA is a good idea? Vegas? It takes the power of the ENTIRE Colorado River to power those cities! Because they aren't supposed to be there! LA running out of water, and getting caught ablaze every three months isn't -climate change-. You aren't supposed to live I'm a barren desert!

I live in northern Louisiana but go down to NOLA for doctor-s appointments frequently. It really is in dire straits and just keeps getting worse. The city has so much of its own identity that if something isn-t done within the next century, the US will lose one of its most unique cities and cultures
reply

We should honestly just demolish or abandon the whole city and move those people somewhere else. I actually sorta mean that even tho its obviously not an easy task because the area is gonna be under water eventually anyway. Its on borrowed time so there's no point in even wasting time with it.

New Orleans strategically one
of the most important cities
in the world. It is the first port
along the most important waterway in the world. No other
country in the world has a more
extensive system of navigable
waterways that feed to New Orleans.

I just want to say if you understand how important that Mississippi river is he realize that that River is really the Nile river and we are in fact in Egypt not America but that-s a different story in a different video logo. Look it up Cairo Illinois Cairo Egypt. Lol

Don-t you think South Florida being a peninsula with oceans in each side, Lake Okeechobee (a little bigger than lake Pontchartrain) and the whole bottom half the of state being an actual swamp. I-d like to see in comparison that would make a cool video!

In August 2005 me and a coworker from NOLA were at a job in the Dominican Republic. I asked him if he thinks its a doomed city. -No-, he said, -why would you ask that? - Not two weeks later Hurricane Katrina blew through. I felt like I owed him an apology.
reply

People shouldn't insist on living in places that can't support life.
If a hurricane destroys where you live, go live some place else.
People in Florida can't even get insurance anymore but people still flock there.
What is wrong with people?

I think a good video idea that's similar to this would be a video about the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The area in the US where earthquakes occur, but its not near a fault line and caused one of the worst earthquakes in American history back in the 1810s.
reply

New Orleans is the city of walls. They really know how to mitigate the water for the most part. But Water and fire are two most destructive things to human cities it-s going to be a big challenge to preserve the city in the future
reply

People need to stop living in New Orleans. Why the hell we keep rebuilding a city that is constantly torn down by hurricanes is beyond me and an absolute waste of human lives and resources. Shut it down give it back to the ocean.
reply

That is a complete lie! We are not losing land every hour, every day, every year! Lies! Your map is nothing more than high tide versus low tide. If what you said was true, we would be gone already yet here we are.
reply

I'll pick up sugar there, but am not a fan of New Orleans. But, if you love it, I'm sorry your city may drown one day. I try leaving asap. It's a tossup to me which city I dislike the most: Detroit or New Orleans?
reply

Moral of this story? You cannot fight nature. EVER! Much like all development on barrier islands, n. o. Should have a moratorium on any new or replaced construction on any land not naturally above sea level.
reply

My hometown (San Antonio) really only exists because of New Orleans. We were there for you during Katrina and we will always be there for you in the future! Much love to you and yours, New Orleans!
reply

Basic. Build on the gulf below sea level in hurricane country. Then keep rebuilding it every time it gets destroyed, even though it's nothing more than one giant crime scene. Brilliant.
reply

I'm glad the guy mentioned at least football field. i already thought that i will get disappointed by an american video without mentioning any football fields as a way to measure something!
reply

New Orleans is like the Venice of North America. A major world port for a lot of its history & also struggles with major flooding issues.
Or like Mexico City - sinking.

reply

Dangerous, humid, in the verge of natural destruction. I don-t know why people live in New Orleans. Just like Miami it will be underwater in the upcoming 3 decades
reply

I would think at the worst, NOLA has 75 years left to keep its originality? I feel that is a lot of time to come up with the ways & means to make sure NOLA survives! -
reply

I visited Nola for a Seahawks game in 2016 and liked it enough to take a job down there last year which was a mistake. Crime is so bad that I had to leave a year later.
reply

Haha. i was born and raised by New Orleans. Westwego to be exact. New Orleans does NOT sit near the Gulf. its almost 4 hours away from the mouth of the river
reply

Best placed for music. Arguably the most influential city of 20th century in that category, and much of that is down to it's geographical position.
