Just think, If the Arabs of the Persian Gulf, like Saudi Arabia and others, are as rich as they boast, they probably have more money than brains. Why? because with their money they could make a canal through Saudi Arabia wide enough to have ships to move freely to the Red Sea, or with a joint venture with the United Arab Emirates and Oman and create a canal to the Arabian Sea. Then Iran would see no more ships going through the strait of Hormuz. Hormuz is that, NOW? -

Instead of spending billions on building super-high towers for prestige purposes, build a canal, so your oil continues to flow without any interruptions. Then Iran will run around in circles because the Strait of Hormuz is still guarded, but has no more important scientific activities available for their eavesdropping. After all the money you have invested to venture into such a project, would only be more lucrative to your investment, of such a venture. SkC.

No worries! (For Americans) The USA has virtual absolute policing of the Panama Canal. The USA is backing away from 80 years of enforcement of maritime peace across the world. We (along with Canada and Mexico) are energy independent. For those who missed it - Americans are fed up with the price of this security. Those countries that rely on oil from the Middle East need to partner-up with other oil reliant countries to safeguard their energy supply.

Horseshiz. There is plenty of oil not bottlenecked by the Hormuz. Oil is fungible. a blockage in the Persian Gulf just makes the rest of the world's oil more valuable. The ONLY reason the Gulf countries are so wealthy is that it is the CHEAPEST place to produce oil. And Saudi could always build pipelines to avoid the Strait.

Disagree. If one believes the world revolves around only the energy issue, it would have connected the sources of energy to alternative sea or land routes which would have been much cheaper than maintaining a dozen aircraft carriers and hundreds of other battleships. Or made peace between Shias and Sunnis.

None of these -choke point's- are within the USA and therefore the USA should concentrate on it's own territories instead of trying to be the worlds global police force. While this was a very interesting and informative video on the history of oil, it's the politics that count, the sooner that the USA normalises it's relations with Iran, the better for the whole world, maybe not for the Iranian people who will no doubt remain subjugated under the dictatorial regime.

If Iran was to block the Strait of Hormuz it would only be cutting it-s nose off to spite it-s face. Every industrial nation would come together & destroy that country.

20 years ago this might have been a major threat to the USA but the Bush admin made the USA energy independent so today it is China who is dependent on this strait and the oil of the gulf
