Thomas Jefferson was a founding father of the United States but were his principles outweighed by his participation in slavery? Thomas Jefferson, founding father of the United States and primary author of the Declaration of Independence, was part of America s fight for freedom and equality. But in his personal life, he held over 600 people in slavery. Are his enlightened principles outweighed by his participation in a greater injustice? Frank Cogliano puts this controversial figure on trial in History vs. Thomas Jefferson. Max: I'm really glad you brought this series back. History is often a lot more complicated and messed-up than most people realize. Maybe you guys should put George Washington on trial next time. For a guy who was historically famous for being unable to tell a lie. he really did lie a lot. Just watch Adam Ruins Everything: Reanimated History if you don't believe me.

You know it's even worse than this video points out. The people who were considered white back then was much more narrow. And as for the judging people by the standards of today ignores countless people who didn't own slaves either because they weren't wealthy and or they opposed the practice. The fact anyone would defend the morals of wealthy people back then really shows how people do the same thing today defending the wealthy who just like then exploit people and nations for personal gain

It is wrong to judge a historical figure by what he did not do. Most of the arguments against Jefferson are like he did not abolish slavery, he did nothing against slavery in his state, he did nothing good for the enslaved. With this logic Jefferson can be accused of anything: he did not build the White House, he did not stop the Second World War, he did not save Abraham Lincoln, he didn't invent ice cream. Historical figure should be judged by what exactly he DID and did it wrong.

Sadly I don't think we should judge our modern sensibilities on today's sensibilities mostly because it's like talking to a foreign country today they don't have the same ideals as that is talking at them country plus considering a lot of people's mindset even in the North there wasn't a lot of people who would have supported him freeing everybody or even treating them as the exact equals let alone listen to him if he wrote those laws and made it legal as president

This information is what I think of when people say that we need to bring the country back to what the founding fathers intended. Especially when those people are non-white women or women in general. There are Congresswomen who say this often, and all I can think is, The founding fathers didn't want you voting, let alone holding office. You really want to go back there?

Change is done in tiny baby steps. Thomas Jefferson was a radical by the standards of his time period. His generation took the first step twords the society that we live in today. Was Thomas Jefferson a flawed human being? Yes! If you expect perfection every single person will disappoint you. No human has ever been perfect.

The founders saw the contradiction of having slaves in a free constitutional republic but they didn t want to get rid of slavery in fear that it would start a Civil War, but the Civil War over slavery happened anyway. So it was probably still best to have gotten rid of it when the US was founded.

This has gotten more and more liberal to the point of where I am unsubscribing. You measure today s lessons upon the social norms of a past era. It must be so nice to sit back and make judgments from a hindsight position.

There is no evidence that Thomas Jefferson fathered Sally Hemmingway's children. Just that someone from the Jefferson male line did. Could have been him or his brothers or his sons or his nephews.

You americans make me laugh when you frown upon acts taken by people of the past, just let me reveal you that each of you hardly would have done better than them in the world they grew up

I'd like to see a history versus on Eamon de Valera. He's quite similar to Jefferson in that he helped found his country but also made many mistakes and is quite controversial

The fact that people continue to view history through the lens of modernity just shows that people are too dim to have their opinions taken with any degree of severity.

Hold It! As a non-american and not exactly an historian, I would just like to say that I think some of the songs in 1776 and Hamilton with him are really good.

Hello, can you make History vs. Woodrow Wilson or History vs. Oliver Cromwell, please! By the way, I learned a lot about Thomas Jefferson, thanks!

I'm a Japanese student and reviewing American history for the Common Test for University Admissions next weekend, so it's exactly timely!
