For me, its pretty obvious why we sleep, as with most animals in the world, we either have a daily or nightly cycle, in which our biology advanced to make we more efficient in either of them.
We dont see well in the dark as some other night animals. So whats the best thing we can do at night, since it would be dangerous to go out as we are not prepared for it?
When we sleep, we conserve energy, and do homework, even though we dont know exaclty what is this homework.

The problem is not as much as school as other people in the comment would like to express, but the society schedule. Most schools, workplaces and social facilities open from early morning to evening, while many people naturally sleep better from mid-late night to mid-late morning. But you just can't force to go to sleep, so the option is to do stuff until late, and wake up early, deprivating yourself of sleep. That is the doom of the night owls, not just schools.
