I just placed the next bee at the hex one up, and one up-left from the previous one. Repeated that pattern throughout the hive. This solution is soo much more elegant. The way it grows is really beautiful. The whole number of edges idea thing felt pretty pointless tho, and would have liked it if the explaination instead focused more on how to find that winning pattern.

I'm seeing something else here. the finished solution resembles ancient military formation, perhaps because that's the safest way to defend all starting positions and then move into new positions with the fewest people.
