Sexpionage tells the stories of two women who were seduced by secret agents working for the East German intelligence service, the Stasi. At the height of the Cold War the Stasi would regularly despatch their agents to the West German capital, Bonn, armed with the task of forming long term relationships with single women working at embassies or government ministries. These women were unwittingly tapped for top secret information which was then passed on to the East. Both Gabriele Kliem and Margaret Hike had no idea that their lovers were spies until both women were arrested for treason. This film tells the story of the years they spent with their secret agent lovers and explores the feelings they are left with after the most significant relationships of their lives were revealed to be a sham

I just still can't believe that what appear to be two intelligent women, they would permit and let their emotions fall for all this maneuvering of their lives! This seems to confirm the fact that our primitive instincts are more powerful than our education, or should I call it schooling. Without going into detail, I fear that the loneliness that these two women suffered from, was brought about by the consequences of thinking that living in a modern city, can bring power and equality for a man and a woman. It still seems that irrespective of the level of education, Human Emotions, always tump the truth! . The bright lights of a modern city, cause many people to go blind to what undesirable activities the city lights can offer in camouflage and distortions! It is so unfortunate that what we saw in this video, still goes on, all due to the atmosphere associate with modern city life, because the cold war is always present in a modern competitive city full of strangers. It is interesting that at about 1904 men suffered the same loneliness when they left their farms, fishing fields, and families and went to Detroit to work in mass production industries. What family men faced when they left their families, thinking that they are going to reap the benefits by working close to a city. makes interesting reading and one learns how the minds and bodies of both man and women were influenced to rob them of their natural masculinity and femininity to replace it with a tacit mistrust where both man and woman now claim to be independent of each other and many people misinterpret the fact that we should learn to be self-sufficient, but never independent of those we love to live with. The look in these two women's eyes says it all. When young they both should have learned the basics of a good life, as nature meant it, and not how their artificial education and expectations distorted it to define what is successful in being a modern man and woman relation with all the other unproductive permutations!

I think these two women are being half-truthful. Their stories have HOLES.
As those two women were CIVIL SERVANTS, I wonder why they DIDN'T suss out their fake boyfriends in the system, before ever giving them their hearts and blind trust. Their stories don't sit right with me.
If you were a civil servant being infatuated or lovesick, shouldn't you be CURIOUS enough about your crush's background and be looking up that person in the system? Lots of lovesick civil servants do that out of curiosity and quietly. Don't they? Cops and detectives do too, especially those entering new relationships. If you are not curious, then you are not really lovesick or infatuated.
As lovesick civil servants, these two women must have read data on their men's birthdates, marital status, taxes, TV licence, properties, etc. They must have known something little more than their names.

Nancy, .. . the sin, the act or the omission may not work corruption of blood. Because I refused to let them draw blood tonight at Northwest Hospital, nurse Esther bullied me. She told me I could not leave the hospital unless I let them draw blood. This is a felony. I told her so. The entire staff became increasingly hostile. Nurse Esther refused to let me turn off the lights in my room. She harrassed me repeatedly, turning the lights on after I turned them off. Everything that happened tonight is exactly the reason why I refuse to get a nursing degree. Every nurse I have ever come into contact with has behaved like this.

This indicates a failure on the part of the BND - West German intelligence services - who should have carried out indepth vetting on anyone working with access to sensitive information and not allowed these particular individuals into those positions as such vetting would have made it clear that they were vulnerable to such agents.
I myself didn't obtain EPV (enhanced positive vetting) in 1989 in the Intelligence Corps and did not progress beyond basic training, I wasn't told the reasons why but decades later it is pretty obvious that I too would have been open to female agents from the East.

Wow, I waited the whole documentary thinking these women were going to show remorse for systematically betraying their countries for 1-2 decades. The lady with the dogs didn't sell her soul once, twice or even fifteen times. It was fifteen hundred times! Seriously, I've seen people who have suffered highly traumatised childhoods with less of a victim mentality than this woman. They both need to face it and use the experience to make themselves stronger and help others.

I don't like it when a documentary is literally 99% a series of interviews. Like show us a LOT more like 15: 34 kinda stuff at least. So we can see how it looked and geek out over the old tech etc. rather than just looking at a close up of these old people talking. Never thought i'd be asking for more B-role but hey here I am MORE B ROLL! I wanna see the insides of Soviet offices etc. They can speak over it. I just hate watching a series of straight interviews.

Believe it or not there are several cases here in the Uk of under cover police men on long term surveillance jobs who have actually married and fathered children with the women they spied on.
Im certainly no snowflake but l find it deplorable. The cases are going through the legal process at the moment.
These were just low level protest types
Not exactly James Bond level.
The victims are suing the police.

I'm not a fan of Communist governments nor those who work for them. The Wall came down after all and their devious activities were all for nothing.
They talk about manipulating less attractive women but their behaviors make them the ugliest of all. These women knew what they were doing was wrong but the biggest poverty of all is loneliness. Again, to the a-hole spies, your Wall came down and you're soulless.

I think probably that these men ended up having miserable lives, the women probably came out of it pretty strong in the end. People do tend to get exactly what they deserve. If you're a bad person, your wife will leave you and your kids won't want anything to do with you and you end up alone and miserable. If your a good person, good people will gravitate to you, and good opportunities will come your way

23: 40 video minute, The post-coital readiness to disclose information. I can not imagine a more heartless, cruel, and sick-minded individual. To use a woman's need for affection and love to extort information from her is the cruelest behavior I could imagine. Then they put her in prison. This is the sickest, most cruel situation I have ever heard of.

Many of the techniques used by the romeo's seem to by typical interrogation type tactics which were also used to break prisoners of war during various conflicts on both(any) sides. It is quite likely then that one can deduce that these women may have been possibly subjected to hypnotism techniques which were also used as part of these tactics.

Was anyone shocked at no display of remorse by the perpetrators? They were smiling and so satisfied with themselves, self confident, till the end and finding all sorts of explanations to minimize it all. Such a contrast in compare to the women expressions. Honestly, I cannt tell whose minds are more screwed up in this story!

The designer of this hideous Romeo Spy program, Markus Wolf aka Topaz, paid no price for his actions in the new united Germany. Some justice, right? Still, each of these people knew the price for their actions long before they knocked boots with the HVA spies. Male Mata Haris.

The things that I would NEVER do for love lie, steal, cover up or take a fall. Also, I won't sponsor a VISA for anybody. When you are asked to do something dishonest, it means you are NOT being truly loved or respected by a USER. Beware of those who love things and use people.

A bunch of incels in the comments really think they're too intelligent to fall in this trap. Like, they were studied for 2 years, and a whole bunch of psychologist planned every interaction. These relationships were abusive and manipulative, and no one is immune to that.
reply

It's disgusting with how much enthusiasm these men share their stories. They have not only manipulated and traumatised these poor souls, but also robbed them of the opportunity to have a family with children. And that's a tragedy.
reply

Interesting and sad stories but how the communist government of East Germany brutally crushed freedom and murdered and imprisoned countless people - thats a much, much worse atrocity than what the spies did to these women.
reply

No matter how sad, lonely or depressed anyone is, it's not an excuse for treason. In positions like these women held, they should have known better. No sympathy whatsoever for them. A traitor is a traitor - period.

Youv'e got to hand it to the DDR, out of the 2 Germany's, they were the cleverest, they had nothing but their brains, the only Country that made Communism work, and in some ways i wish they were still around.
reply

The West did the same thing. Even today British agents went uncover in left wing organisations and try to use the women in the organisations to find out things they can pass to the government.
