This week we meet the water caddies who delivered water on their backs from wells to peoples' homes; fire-fighters who had only their own wetted beards to breathe through when they entered blazing buildings; the dockers and deal porters who, with no regard for health or safety issues, serviced the tall ships; brick makers; and crossing sweepers who shovelled the muck left by hundreds of horses and swept the streets keeping crossing places clean for the passing gentry

As-falt man. Its pronounced as-falt: ergo asphalt. Its a Greek word, nothing to do with ash- at all. Sphalm (pronounced sfalm) means error. -Sphalt means erroneous. Hence A-sphalt means non-erroneous, thus meaning perfect or impeccable. Tell that to the younger bloke too who seems to be an asphalt scholar, alas in vain, as he cant even pronounce it correctly yet.

Being someone who works in a lumber yard, I do not take our hilos for granted. I can only slightly relate to the dock workers, sometimes I have to carry up to 450lbs (mainly because I can't physically carry any more, 450 is pushing it already) for 100ft max, and let me tell you, having a couple 24ft LVLs on your shoulder while running amuck, not fun

For the household who recieved that barrel of water, they'd have had to be pretty sparing with it if that was their delivery for the day. It'd be enough for drinking and cooking, but that'd be it. You're not going to call the caddy back for three more trips so you can take a bath or wash your clothes.
Hygeine was a luxury they couldn't afford yet.

As a retired Firefighter/EMS First Responder with over 27yrs service, I started out as a Smoke Eater. We only had 2 total SCBA's for a 35 member Fire Company w/5 Apparatus. Now our Company carries 6-8 SCBA's per each Rig. Per NFPA Standards, your only on the fire ground with it on. full stop!

1. The times were brutal. Money was short, life was grim, pain was the standard, and many were malnourished and just barely surviving.
2. But also they could not be bothered to carry their own torch at night so they hired kids to carry the light source for them. -_-

i have not bought a plastic bottle in many years. I go to our local spring and fill my own containers. I heat my home only with wood, I am a luddite in one sense, but I am sitting on my recliner sofa watching this on my TV with come cinema system.

The civilIzation we have now (for better or for worse) and the civilization we're currently building, they were/are not just being made by billionaire tycoons, but by millions and millions of ordinary people.

Women in early industrial cities: let's create illegal bareknuckle boxing matches to earn an income. Maybe do a bit of swordfighting.
MRAs a century later: women are weak and need a man to tell them what to do

I dropped history in year 9 and was glad to be rid of it. None of the people I had to study seemed remotely real and I couldn't have been less interested.
Now I'm binge watching these for pure enjoyment.

I love Tony, but all I can think about when I see him is him using the words thou, art, and thee in Man Down. I mean thy see that thou art a good actor, for thou articulates lexicon well.
reply

I've always loved Tony, grew up watching him on time team and before that maid marrion and her merry men. He is a legend he gives 100 percent effort and forged my love of history.
reply

I get scared just watching him climb further upas a fire manas for the other jobs, immigrants leave their countries for the unknown, and get lower wages than the natives, oh well!
reply

For all them folks who think that other times were better, I think is because other times are romanticized; living during this early XXI century is the best time to be alive TBH
reply

I like that tony is physically representative for our age, when we mostly do non-physical jobs. It shows how really exhausting and physically challenging these jobs where

being a able bodied man would make the laddering much less difficult, and why so frightened when you are harnessed and totally safe with a belayed rope?
reply

12: 30 when doing a documentary or a information piece, NEVER DO THIS. Having 3 speakers converge at once is horrible for the viewer and creates such a mess.
reply

Modern American firefighters still practice using the hook ladder. They perform time trials and scale practice buildings amazingly quickly.
reply

All these people feeling sorry for Tony when they dont even care about the people who today have jobs just as dangerous or worse
reply
