When the US loses a defensive war against a bunch of drunks one island over - or when the US loses core territorial integrity WHATSOEVER - then the VC can be compared with the MOH. Until then, the VC should simply be considered a sign of being part of the 2nd best military in the world - nothing more. The US has given 3000, the UK have given 1300 - but remember the US fields 1. 4 MILLION while UK fields 140k - a 10x discrepancy compared to a 2. 5x discrepancy in total medals.
Brits are seething about the comparison in the title when really the VC is as good as an aluminum can compared to the MOH if you are capable of basic maths.

This is an absolutely insane and incredible story about a normal bloke during something so brave and it definitely deserved a recommendation. That is why the Victoria Cross is absolutely beautiful, bc the recipient didn't see it as some grand action or anything, but simply what had to be done to save his comrades, and in the recipients eyes, it's not something they should get rewarded for by shining useless medals, their real reward and loss is the lives they saved and didn't save. The medal fits so well, bc it's a lot like the recipients, humble and not from the top brass.

Hi Mr Clarkson, I'm an Englishman, who has lived in New Zealand for 22 years, I came here to visit the grave of Charles hazlitt upham, VC and Bar, from the 2nd WW. His dispatches read like a 'boysown' comic. In my opinion the most highly decorated soldier of the 1939-1945 conflict. By all accounts, he was a modest, but sometimes belligerent man, I watched him on his NZ 'this is your life' and he was awkward in the extreme. He simply did his duty. A movie should be made of his life, because we owe him so much. Unfortunately the cancel culture, woke trend would never allow it.

Back when I was a teen living in Aldershot (Home of the paras) I was in the 10th parachute cadet force and did a 25 kilometer march in remembrance of those that fought in the battle of Arnhem, we camped at Oosterbeek and the bridge too far was the pinnacle of the journey!
We didn't have cameras on phones back then nor did we have mobile phones so only pictures i have is those in bedded into my mind.
The bridge was saturated in bullet damage, it was a disaster: '(
I've seen the graves, the masses of white crosses as far as you can see, I'll never forget! :'(

Many comments on the footballer comment. but the final story of the daughter who never knew is mind-blowing. On many levels. Completely cemented the story as beyond extraordinary, and Cain as the truest hero. Well done, Jeremy The Story Teller.
In the U. S. many small towns put up signs in the welcome area and say, Home of Medal of Honor winner, John Q. Public. And then you can visit their preserved childhood home, or a monument. I've stopped at 4-5 while touring. It is always worth the time and detour. It really makes you think.

Visited the Battle of Oosterbeek site many times as I have a very close friend in Arnhem. On a visit to Hartenstein museum, the thing I found most striking was the incredible bravery noted in the citations for medals that didnt quite merit a VC. Reading those highlighted the incredible acts of gallantry necessary to be recognised by the award of a Victoria Cross. In my home, proudly on the wall is a copy of the VC awarded to Henry Howie Robson (my grandfathers cousin. Excellent video.

Top brass of the English military intelligence were, at some point, informed, by the resistance, about the German panzer divisions that were stationed at the north-east of Arnhem. How much information really got to them, how accurate that information was is debatable. Apparently this information did not alter the timing of the planned mission, sadly so many British troops did not make out of Arnhem alive. We remember them allways!

Not sure if anybody has seen the video of 1 U. S. soldier fighting off an ambush, infiltrating a bunker, and ultimately having a firefight with the enemy until help arrived for his down squad members. From what i remember that brave man passed on that day, but a true hero if i may say so myself.

What Does It Take To Earn The British Medal Of Honor? what a horrible title for the video. Britain will loose much of its culture if we insist of americanising every thing. A medal of Honor is the top award in the US but it is not the same as a VC. A VC is much harder to win

Ones thing for sure the Brits had to earn there VC. Most never knew they won the VC because they received after they died from the result of earning it. Those was the days when us Brits had pride in there country. Now its a shambles of political abuse, scams and sleazy MPs.

He should narrate the story of Eric Winkle Brown. Not a VC candidate but a truly extraordinary life - that he never received a knighthood for his service is as great a disgrace as can be imagined. Total respect to him, lest he be forgotten

The V. C is often used to hide a military disaster's Something good for the press to hide the disaster Taking nothing away from the brave men who earned it Officer's had to salute a VC winner But most soldiers didn't push this honour

We learned in boot camp about various Medal of Honor winners-and how 99% of them were awarded it posthumously. One of them if I remember right threw himself on a grenade, somehow survived and then threw himself on a second one.

AHEM The VC is /older/ than the CMOH so it should be 'The Victoria Cross, US equivalent is the Congressional Medal of Honor'. the wording makes it sound like the VC copied the CMOH when neither copied the other.

Clarkson is brilliant in his own earthy story telling. Great punchline to end it by noting the Major was his wife's father. Understated Brits. From a fan of your car escapades with your motley crew in Qld Australia

Sad when you realize the U. S. has awarded most of over 2, 000, 000 Purple Heart medals to recipients since WW1 thats quite a large number of people to be seriously injured or killed in combat
