The Stanford Prison Experiment Was One of the Most Disturbing Studies Ever

In 1971, professor Philip Zimbardo put together one of the most intriguing and famous psychology experiments ever: the Stanford Prison Experiment, designed to study the effects of incarceration on prisoners and guards. Using an advertisement to recruit college-aged men in the area for a one-of-a-kind study, Zimbardo and his team hoped to remove volunteers predisposed to mental illness and those with existing records from their experiment. Nonetheless, the Stanford Prison Experiment brought out those qualities in its participants

Its not hard to tell a lot of you have heart. But the reality of things is very harsh. We were all born to love and learn or taught Evil. That being said who did it start with? Where did it start? Is it environment that can create this? Or is someone to blame for all this? Is it both? Thats how you get a study like this one.
Look at the study as a whole and in between the lines. The professors allowing things to go to such and extent. The guards willing to go to such an extent, wanting and willing to do things finding pleasure in it (admitted by participants today. I see people say well they were told to do it. Even so, does it not frighten you the people willing to do these things are good people? Imagine in the hands of evil. Look at the circumstances and magnify them.
You think everyone in the Nazi military was Evil? How many people in the Nazi military were good people being told this is for the greater good and some cash? Could that have not easily become you? A soldier with a family to feed. I theorized by asking people. What would you do if you lived during WWII. The response is always expected that theyd be in America and theyd chose to not fight in the war. Dont you think thats what the Nazi soldier would have wanted to do( Their Country was struggling and the poorest people took the hit) This is really ground breaking information to know. Dont take this one with a grain of salt. Psychologically you can break down this experiment thatll help better understand greater situations. I mentioned Nazis to help people understand my crazy rant, but this is something that goes on today that were okay with. Do your own research
You being the best you can be saves the world.

Before Trump took Office, I would have been highly suspicious that this experiment was mostly set up for show. Since then up through the present, seeing how many Free Americans have had their Reality truly bent by Trump and his supporters in Government, I think this experiment may have been a real response and not a performance at all.
I actually see now how delicate the human mind can be. At first I thought the Trump Cult was made up of people who were already on the edge of sanity just latching on to their greatest fears of conspiracies all around them.
But after Jan 6th, seeing many who had regular lives, become these violent delusional characters, more than willing to follow their deeply disturbed paranoid former Leader Trump, into his deranged view of hate and took to heart Trump's enemies who had been hidden behind their adherence to the Democratic Party.
Formerly average hard working individuals who had been quite patriotic and proud of being a US citizen, suddenly turn their backs on everything America had stood for them and entering into some kind of mass hysteria. Quick to join up with a Cult that intends to overthrow the American Government in order to replace it with a dictator.
Shocking! Mind control is real! I do not understand what caused this. I never saw in Trump what his followers claim to see. I do see the hypocrisy in what he says and does. How can they not? Scary!

I'm a California ex-felon that was sentenced to 25 years to Life for a 1982 murder. I was sent to Sa Quentin prison (level 4 maximum security prison) at 18 years of age. I went on to serve 29 years in various prisons in California. I was later released at the age of 47 years old.
I watched the Stanford movie and to my shock in such a mock fake setting I thought for sure it can't produce real results. OMG IT TRULY DID. NOW IMAGINE IF THE EXPERIMENT WOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO CONTINUE.
CALIFORIA GUARDS HAVE A VERY, VERY HIGH SUICIDE AND DEVORCE RATE. That alone should speak volumes. They take it home.
ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY. WE SEE IT IN OUR WORLDLY AFFAIRS IN OUR HEADLINES (PRESIDENT PUTIN.
IF ANY PSYCHOLOGIST OR COLLEGE STUDENY (MAJORING AS A CRIMINALOGIST WANTS TO PICK MY THOUGHTS AND EXPERIENCES IM AN OPEN BOOK. I've spoken for a Professor's class at UCSD. It was very rewarding to give back. Peace out. You all be safe.

This experiment is frightening! It shows show even the most rational, sane, educated person can easily condescend to their base sadistic and inhumane nature.
Is it any wonder how regular Germans and Polish simply went along with the rantings of a mad man? Is it any wonder how regular mothers and fathers watch as infants were tortured in front of them?
Under the right circumstances, each of us has the capability to unleash our sadistic lust for power. Anyone who says theyd never. should never say never.

I mean, what do people expect from prison guards in a real prison (not this experiment? They're there to do a job and feed their families. I'm sure a lot of real guards are nice, and want to be nice and show compassion to prisoners, but they know if they're too nice they'll get stepped all over, and if they're too mean, the prisoners will target them and hold grudges. So when you have to fear for your life everyday at work, it's hard to maintain a balance and be stable.

The government uses universities like Stanford and especially Stanford to do social engineering experiments like MK - Ultra and other little or lesser known experiments. I even heard a rumor that the two Urban gangs, the Bloods and the Crips were created at Stanford University. This makes sense do to the fact that gang hand signs were popular among college fraternity members also going back centuries and among freemasonry as well.

The amount of power given to perceived authority is life threatening. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY PARENTS should be scrutinized and tested before they are allowed to raise their babies/children. Society scrutinizes prospective drivers with books and driving tests before they are allowed to drive a vehicle, but anyone is allowed to raise/influence a baby/human life just because they had s&x. What kind of society is this?

In my youth, as a guard I believe I would not have taken part in the way these guards behaved. Trying to be the voice of reason I believe. But, as a prisoner I wouldve probably become overwhelmed at the lack of justice and the cruelty displayed and I wouldve probably struck out violently. Now that Im nearly 60 I think I would probably try to be the voice of reason on either side. Or so I would like to believe.

I think the biggest issue with that study is the fact that they the participants were college guys. I was in a fraternity and a part of hazing there were things done by people that were supposed to be your friend during that five weeks that you would never normally agree to. I had 21-year-old little boy yelling at me and making me nervous while I outweighed him by 60lbs.

Watching the film based on the experiment at the moment, and had to stop watching from uncomfortability. The acting is honestly so good that I feel indifferent about the actors in normal life now. I'm truly confused how the professor wasn't sued, or charged with something. This is one of those in the name of science situations that truly shouldn't have happened.

It's a great experiment ruined by Zimbardo, I understand morally it's an overall evil experiment. But the idea behind it was fascinating but it just feels as though Zimbardo pushed for results instead of letting them naturally happen. It's a shame because nowadays you will NEVER have that opportunity again without being questioned over legality
reply

he did not randomly select his students, there was a magazine published asking for ppl who were interested in getting paid to be a prison guard. on top of that he told the guards exactly how to act. this whole experiment was faulty and isnt taken into much consideration now. zimbordo made the experiment work how he wanted it to
reply

Dehumanizing? Yep, but not as dehumanizing as what real murderers, rapists and other violent offenders do to their victims. the entire reason they're in prison in the first place! I couldn't give two shits less about what happens to society's vermin predators when the steel doors of justice slam behind them. Good riddance.
reply

Teams being lead by the researcher dosent entirely discredit results. A prison guard has job expectations.
This was a study of how roles and job description could influence roles and behavior.
To that end, this shows how quickly even the researcher assumed the societal roles each of them played.

reply

Yea definitely a sick study but it did show that giving someone just a inch of power they will abuse it but that professor not allowing them to leave like he said that they could before it started and its sickening asf imo but the two movies about this were great the Adam Brody and the other film
reply

So obviously you can't keep guards for long periods of time. They seem to be just as effected as the prisoners. But when someone who is fresh minded is instantly revolted by what they are doing, then that is a major indication that it's time to change the guards
reply

Its interesting that so many people are so quick to call this experiment a sham. Almost as if they are trying to protect themselves from what this experiment is claiming. That regular, normal people are capable of unspeakable evil given the right circumstances.
reply

It's easy to dismiss this simulation by Zimbardo, however, what happened at Abu Graibe prison in Iraq, mirrors the experiment. How often this happens where there are not safeguards for inmate rights, remains unknown to protect the guilty.
reply

The Guards actions show how much mental treatments they needed a group of sadistic men bent on none reality job, power tripping thats not how a humanes think. the study was sick. Did they put the doctors away?
reply

All the people saying oh the guards told them to do it obviously do not understand the point of the study, the whole point of the study was to see how far people would go if they were given orders by someone.
