From the age of seven until well into his teens, his life consisted of brutal whippings - his father hated him. Such talent trapped in such a brutish and ignoble cage.
Was he a loss to the world of music. Yes. He was in the line of Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, and John Lennon. But by the time Marvin Gaye went, exhaustion was setting in. AIDS was darkening the sky, Reaganism was rampant and the world was getting scarier every day anyway, so it felt grimly appropriate.

So let me get this straight, his abusive father, kills him for standing up for his mom and himself, and the dad, even while on trial doesnt say he loves his son? And the judge blames the victim. His dad was beyond a coward, he didnt realize that his actions could one day trigger his son and he never saw that hurt, pain and everything else coming out of his son. He didnt cower or run to get the gun he walked calmly, shot him then shot him again. Justice is very seldom served despite his troubles he didnt deserve to die, his dad had a choice, he could have called the police but instead he chose MORE violence against his son. Rest in Power Marvin!

I loved him and his music since I was little I was 7 yrs old 9 months til my eight birthday when this happened and I will never forget this because my grandma ma passed away the same year we got a bunch of Marvin Gaye records I play them all the time we all know the cops the judge was crooked Marvin Gaye dad should spent the rest of his life behind bars so sad and I don't care if he wanted this this was murder

Anybody screaming out loud about a freaking insurance policy whether with reason or not would piss anybody off. Marvin lost it like any other would, he wanted to stop the annoying father from yelling at his mother. He may have gone overboard, but his father proved much less self-control. I find his father guilty of involuntary manslaughter and give him 7 years in prison.

Are you serious? Losing Marvin was a gigantic lost. I still wonder what other music he would have created. He certainly was unique and before his time. It's a real tragedy that he had so many demons and I don't doubt it was all due to his father. And ironically, it was deemed that he brought his death upon himself.

That judge was bias. looking at the incident from a one day perspective. Marvin had years of abuse from his father. He abused his children and their mother. That man should've been electrocuted. I honestly wish it was the other way around, Marvin didn't deserve to die. His father did.

This was some BS, how could the father basically get such a light sentence. He literally left the scene and came back to shoot his son twice. You have to be truly evil to kill your child and even after his death you can't even say you love him.

I really loved Marvin Gaye's music and played his Grammy winning album often on my stereo. I was extremely shocked and saddened by his sudden death at the hands of his father. A great talent was suddenly taken away.

By his dad looking for insurance papers makes me think he had the insurance covered for Marvin, and was going to eventually have him out of the picture for the insurance money. just my opinion
