Its a pity they preserve only the most useless and corrupt people who undoubtedly destroyed civilisation along with their kind in other countries, also cowering in bunkers. However, thousands of them would run out of food, and they would eventually emerge to a frozen world with nobody left to do everything for them. No doubt they would soon start to kill each other as food supplies in the caverns became depleted, with Nancy Pelosi marched out the front door to die, and senators lined up and shot to save food. Nobody else left alive would be sorry to see the end of them, as they would be as useless to a dead world as they were to a living one.

Although its sad, it makes sense that congress couldnt take their families to the bunker. No one else in the country gets the luxury of bringing their family to the bunker and its only fair that they cant either. It may also make them less likely to use the nuclear option frivolously if their families will be lost from it.
